Taking a Christmas break from my Tropico Story, to make a tread/story about my newly acquired Anno 1800. My first Anno Series game. Just finished the (tutorial style) campaign. Now heading into the sandbox, no intension making it hard, just want to enjoy this first game on normal settings. The first thing I encounter is this funny personality.

g9PyGlS.jpeg

January 1808

A subject of Danish King Christian 7. I am sent to Faroe Islands to reclaim as much as possible, as we lost control after the war with England in the early 1800’s. With just one flagship, a small group of settlers, and a little bit of resources and rigsdaler (old Danish money). We settle on the Island of Streymoy. Starting a simple farming village and a sawmill. Currently 120 people.

cIc7eMb.jpeg

March 1808

News of Streymoy soon spread in Denmark, farmers come from the poorest regions, mostly in Jylland and on Fyn. Local production of “brændevin” (Strong alcohol) and simple working clothes have begun. The first pub called “Værtshuset” is now able to serve the locals. Even a fire station was constructed and the first brick building.

smLUOZq.jpeg

June 1808

In May, I send an article to Copenhagen Newspaper, Danske Post-Tidende, recruiting specialised workers to join our community. Soon we got a brick factory, and a slaughter house, creating sausages, like black pudding,  medisterpølse and different kinds of salami. The brick factory employees, are organized in a worker union, the first of its kind in the world. A subject of William I of the Netherlands have settled a nearly island, we are currently at peace with them. We now got 277 farmers and 150 workers living in our port town Thorshavn.

    August 1808

Our flagship, the proud “Princess Caroline” had now travelled most of the waters near Faroe Islands. She met ships from Spain, Prussia, and our allied France. Nørrebro Village expanded, with large grain farms, a mill, and bakeries. Helping to provide enough food for our workers.

    3JkCWtJ.jpeg

    September 1808

A fire broke out in Amager Village, the lumber mill was saved, but the potato farm and brændevin distillery was lost and had to be rebuild. Due to the increased activity in Nørrebro Village, the local warehouse was extended.

    nEBE9ol.jpeg

    October 1808

Attempting to get iron production up and running, we overextended the workforce and urgently needs to attract labour fast. Sadly, knowing about our current level of cloth production, just a few came with the boats from Copenhagen. Not wanting to freeze in the cold windy Fareo weather. Hoping to solve the situation, production of fabric and cloth was setup in the small village of Vejby at the south western edge of town.

    Ddbnbpj.jpeg

    November 1808

The clothing issue was soon fixed, and the next ship from Denmark brough many skilled workers. Although we are still in need of workers, the iron production is running almost smoothly now. The Imperial Navy of France, has settled on a small Island. Our flagship “Princess Caroline” was on a secret mission for the emperor.

    December 1808

Time has come to expand our Faroe settlement, “Princess Caroline” sailed northwest to make a small farming community on the Island of Sandur. Soon after she also created a harbour at the Island of Vágar, starting another small community there.

    The Harbour at Sandur

    HmxPy9v.jpeg

    January 1809

The settlement on Sandur is now a thriving village, with more than 140 inhabitants. The hamlet on Vágar, on the other hand, started with a disaster (**). Disease killed of basically the entire population, with most houses left empty and neglected.

(** editorial: forgot to set up a market place, huge beginner mistake)

    GaRXGLE.jpeg

    February 1809

A school was built in the northern part of Thorshavn. Streymoy is now an industrialized island, with a complex production. Apart from food, cloth, and building materials, also alcohol, soap, coal, iron ore, sails, steal and steal beams are being produced. Recently a shipyard was constructed in the harbour and the first ship is under construction. The town has a population of 2143 people. Just now there is a large fire, but seemingly the firefighters got it under control.

    nlvUdmO.jpeg

    March 1809

Four months has passed since the first small farmstead was raised on Sandur. Today, the largest settlement Skopun, is officially a port town under the Danish crown. Able to sustain is own population, and even deliver a small surplus. The most important industries are still very basic. Fish, meat, cloth, wood, and bricks. The Island has a total population of 593 people.

    April 1809

We constructed a gun factory in the village Troyggja, on our main island. Our flagship the proud “Princess Caroline” was on a mission for the emperor, secretly delivering some sea mines. We build our first schooner in the shipyard of Thorshavn, “Dronning Marie Sophie”. The islands first church, Vor Frue, was built in the north part of Thorhavn.

    Maj 1809

The first group of highly educated people arrived in Thorshavn. Our schooner “Dronning Marie Sophie” is now working a trade route, bringing beer from Skopun to Thorshavn, returning with bread and soap. A small gunboat Pride, was built to protect her. We are helping the friendly William I of the Netherlands, delivering some Royal Christmas Cookies.

    June 1809

On our third island Vágar, the village of Sandavágur is now back on its feet. We built out first frigate “Maria Theresia”. A new schooner, “Magrete I", was built to transport brændevin from Sandavágur to Skopun. A gunboat is being produced to protect her.

    July 1809

We had our first encounter with pirates. Our frigate Maria Theresia was escorting a ship, belonging to Joseph Bonaparte of Spain. When attacked by two pirate gunboats. Maria Theresia left the battle, with some damages, both gunboats sunk.

Thorshavn continues to grow, the southern villages of Vejby and Amager was for the most part consumed by the Town. Factories, workshops, and inhabitants moved to the north. Visiting nobles and other very wealthy people now docked in the harbor, at the new posh pier. Also, a repair crane is under construction in Thorshavn harbour. Commemoration day festival was held this month, the first of its kind in Thorshavn.

    November 1809 (Old World)

We have settled on a new island in the south, intended to become a hub for our coming trade with the new world.  In Thorshavn a Variety Theatre was constructed on Nørrebrogade, close to marketplace Torvet.

    November 1809 (New World)

After a long and hard journey, we reached the Caribbean island of Haiti, led by former slave Henri Christophe. The people of Haiti were friendly, and through trade, we obtained another ship, ready to find a suitable uninhabited island to settle on.

    December 1809 (Old World)

We have signed an alliance with William I of the Netherlands, regarding defence of our mutual possession in this region. On Sandø, production of both flour and bread was increased. To allow farmer families the luxury of baking their own bread and cookies (*), also to provide stable deliveries of bread to Vágar, which does not produce grain themselves.

Editorial (*) Allowing flour to farmer families, is in-game possibility, a luxury need, not to important, but adds to farmer happiness and tax income.

On Vágar, the village of Mount Vágar, expanded a lot, with production of iron ore, potatoes, cattle, brændevin and pebber fruits. The main settlement on the Island, Sandavágur, is now an official port town, under the Danish crown.

On Saint Caroline, the settlement grows, although very slowly. East of the main settlement a small village “Pinaypay” spawned. Providing the settlers with delicious food. A welcome supplement to salted fish and bread otherwise on the menu.

The southern settlement, intended to become our New World trade hub, is now flourishing. The main settlement Fámjin, is located at the middle of the relatively large island Suðuroy.

Skopun on Sandø really developed over the latest months. With better housing, higher tax revenue, more workers, cobbled paved streets, and a school for the many children. The well-contented inhabitants are happy and are currently holding a beer festival.

    February 1810 (Old World)

Pirates’ ships, most often of English or Swedish origin, has become a tread to any honest trader in Faroe waters. The frigate “Dronning Hedevig” was destroyed by a group of pirate gunboats. We are now gathering a fleet in Thorshavn harbour, aiming to do something about it. A second shipyard we added to Thorshavn harbour, to speed up production. Thorshavn is now officially a Danish city. The total population of Streymoy has reached 3591 adults. 1260 farmers, 1467 workers and a bourgeoisie of 864 persons. Most of which lives in the city.

    February 1810 (New World)

We have settled on another Island in the Caribbean, as it seems impossible to reclaim our previous colonies form the aggressive Englishmen. The island “Sankt Vilhelmine” was named after the young princess Vilhelmine Marie, born in 1808.

A fleet consisting of flagship “Dronning Caroline” two frigates “Dronning Cæcilia” and “Dronning Elisabeth Helene” and ship of the line “Dronning Hedevig II.” Was send out to attack any pirate ship in sight. We sunk two pirate frigates before returning to harbour. “Dronning Caroline” was quite heavily damaged.

A Sewing Machine Factory was constructed in the village of Lille Arnøje, at Sandø. The machines are transported to Skopun harbour and shipped to Thorshavn. Where there is great demand for this type of items, from the growing bourgeoisie.

    April 1810 (New World)

The lack of protection from groups of thieves, robbers and the sort, has resulted in a strike amongst the local farmers on Sankt Caroline. We immediately set up a local law enforcement office, but it will take some time to restore order.

Hegnið Village on Vágar, was consumed by the town, the inhabitants and workshops was moved. Now located in the new village of Ovari Hegnid, further away from the city. The pirate attacks are worrying, we have decided to build some more defenses. Work began in Sandavágur Harbour on Vágar, currently the most vulnerable island. Most of our trade ships are now escorted by a frigate.

The Frigate “Dronning Anna” and clipper “Von Arndesdorp” was sent to Sankt Vilhelmine, to support the communities in the New World and hopefully open the first long distance trade route. Sankt Vilhelmine is growing rapidly, the community now has a population 408 people. With production of planks, bricks, beef, cotton fabric, banana, fish oil, fried sweet plantains, alpaca ponchos, corn, and tortillas.

    June 1810 (Old World)

After enjoying extensive self-government, the Faroe Islands have come under the spotlight of the autocratic Danish King Frederik VI. From now on, he will make demands and wishes that we must fulfil. This is the price for our successes in the new world. His first demand came in a letter from Amalienborg, demanding we start rum production at one of the Caribbean islands immediately. As suggested the fur factory was constructed at Sandø. By order from Frederik VI, it was to be a branch of Danish Bidstrup Manor, whose handmade furs he already used. Administrated by the manor’s owner Geert de Lichtenberg. The new fur factory was located in the village of Lille Arnøje, close to the Sewing Machine Factory.

    0rzk9YT.jpeg

At Sandø, the capital Skopun received city rights from King Frederik. Now with more independent self-government in relation to the colonial capital Thorshavn. To celebrate this, the citizens of Skopun built a theater. Located prominently opposite the market square.

    MlEMoqq.jpeg

    July 1810 (New World)

As requested by His Royal Highness Frederik VI, sugar crane plantations and rum production was set up in two villages on Saint Caroline. A relatively easy task as most necessary resources was already present. The rest easily imported from Sankt Vilhelmine. What will become much more complicated is continues transport across the Atlantic, and onward with escorted ship to all the Faroese towns and cities.

    July 1810 (Old World)

The Swedish pirate attacks have significantly increased, just this month we lost a clipper and a schooner, both loaded with valuable cargo. Our “New World” trade harbour at our southern island Suðuroy, have got some coastal canon defence and protective warships.

    August 1810 (Old World)

An infectious disease has ravaged Sandø, at least 100 died in Skopun City alone. The local authorities have imposed extra taxes on the citizens in order to quickly build a hospital.

    CFeK0Wo.jpeg

His Royal Highness have requested delivery of 31 cannons, to a trade ship, currently anchored in Faroese waters. We swiftly fulfilled. As thanks we got new school books from the University in Copenhagen, helping education of a lot of children (*). On the southern island of Suðuroy, the newly fortified northern harbour, became too small. King Frederik VI has sent instructions, clarifying that he expects Suðuroy to become increasingly important over the coming years, needing a much larger harbour to host the overseas trade coming in from the New World. Due to the new harbour construction, also a 2nd town has spawn at the island.

Editorial (*) This was an actual in-game request, and we got “Extended Schooling Act” providing extra happiness in a large area of Thorshavn.

    September 1810 (New World)

After having a period of shifting conflict with local pirate leaders. We were able to pay our way to a more permanent peace agreement. Likely a fragile piece of paper, but we will gain some time, to build a Caribbean Fleet. The downside may we a negative reaction form the other European Colonies.

Our Faroese fleet has become quite extensive. We currently have eight warships at anchor off Thorshavn. Two ships of the line, four frigates and a single gunboat, as well as our flagship Dronning Caroline. In addition, we have nine warships on permanent escort.

    October 1810 (Old World)

The same contagious disease that we previously defeated on Sandø struck Thorshavn City in the following months. Many, both children and adults and especially the elderly over 50, died from violent febrile convulsions. Now the doctors at the new Amager Hospital at Sortevej, have finally got the disease under control, although we still see the occasional case here and there.

    Amager Hospital

    1TyDcfY.jpeg

New Amager, which was originally created by farmers from the former village of Amager, is now also completely absorbed by the city. In Thorshavn, Professor H. C. Ørsted’s Institute, at Skolevej, was constructed. A small university dedicated to physics, chemistry, and biology studies. Another important cultural center is the new Thorshavn Museum at Vejby Langgade.

Our friends William I of the Netherlands, Frederik August 1. of Sachsen and Frederick William III of Prussia, had continuous issues with the Caribbean pirates. Despite our agreement with some pirate leaders, we decided to join a united effort to clear the waters permanently. At this point we have got a sizable fleet gathered at the Caribbeans.

Frederik August 1. of Sachsen and Frederick William III of Prussia is suddenly in a state of was, as they both have possessions at Faeroe Islands and the Caribbeans, this could complicate things.

    December 1810 (Old World)

As King Frederik VI, clearly requested that Suðuroy Island should be our main focus, over the coming years. Skopun City, on Sandø and Sandavágur Town on Vágar Island, will most likely not see much growth in the coming period, unless it is strictly necessary, as support for Thorshavn or Suðuroy Island. Carolineborg on Suðuroy Island has already expanded. Some harbour defence was added, as well as church, school, and hospital. The total population on Suðuroy Island is now 1785 people

The Frigate Dronning Cæcilia was attacked and destroyed by pirates. We bought shares in a Caribbean Island, belonging to Frederick William III of Prussia. Frederick bought them back quite swiftly, and we decided to let it say that way, at least for now. The expedition ship Queen Hedevig, are now exploring the waters of South America. Sadly, a mysterious tropical fever, hit the crew. Most sailors survived, after days in bed and extra rations, but the old cook died.

Chamberlain at the Danish Royal Court, Baron Johannes Emil Adeler, came to Carolineborg. Send by the crown to inspect and support the development of the town. Inspired by the beauty of Suðuroy Island, he constructed a summer residence Dragsholm near the town. The manor is still not completely finished, but functional enough.

The expedition of Royal Embassy Secretary Franck de Jester made landfall, they are now heading west, leaving the coast. Despite some scary looking carving on the ruins, frightening the crew, whenever they appear. All is well.

The upper class in Thorshavn is today extremely wealthy. The combined turnover on the Island is more than 12.000.000 rigsdaler, profits taken by private investors about 4.000.000 rigsdaler. Both the luckiest merchant, especially those trading across the Atlantic, and the factory owners, live a luxurious life. The new trend is that these families, are having beautiful houses built. Typically, in Harbour Neighbourhood, and Vejby Neighbourhood, overlooking the harbour.

Due to the complicated situation in Europe, Danish King Frederik VI and Frederick William III of Prussia, met in neutral Sachsen, to calm the situation in the colonies, preventing a direct confrontation. We will now restrain from unfriendly actions, as long as Prussia does the same. (Game-Related, no relation to real historical events)

    June 1811 (Old World)

Over the latest month a new village, Kjøtbýur, appeared on the island of Vágar, located east of Mount Vagar Village, further away from island capital Sandavágur. The village main purpose is to produce sausages and goulash, aimed for export to our most developed cities.

The Schooner Sophie Juel was destroyed by pirated. Carrying a load of rum and fabric from Carolineborg to Skopun. The conflict with Prussia in the new world, is again on the agenda, with Prussian agents attempting to infiltrate our colony Saint Caroline. Frederik VI’s military advisors recommended that we prepare for war and further strengthen the navy. A new naval port and a small village, was built on the east side of Suðuroy Island. Producing cannons and warships. A few days later Admiral Jørgen Conrad de Falsen, was called to the Royal Court in Copenhagen, to be honored with the order “1st rank of Sea Lord”. First Sea Lord is an in-game achievement adding 25% to warship attack speed.

The clipper Neptun was destroyed by pirates, luckily the ship carried just a small load of meat and red peppers. Our military build up seemingly frightened the Prussian King, we have had no further aggressions from them, and they act very friendly in diplomatic relations. Due to our strong military presence in Faeroe waters, most pirate leaders retrain from attacking us. Chamberlain, Baron Johannes Emil Adeler’s interest in wildlife is well known, and recently he started the construct of a zoological park at his premises on Dragsholm. Currently exhibits a group of Black American Bears he received as a gift from American diplomat William Pinkney.

Denmark: Alliance with Netherlands; Trade Partner with Sachsen, Neutral relations with Prussia, fight all pirate leaders. Other Relations: Netherlands has alliance with both Denmark and Sachsen; they do not fight the pirates. Prussia and Sachsen are at war and both fight with pirates. Russia is neutral with everyone, having a naval fleet on their island, but no colonies in the new world.

    August 1811 (Old World)

To form a new neighborhood in Skopun City, Slågård Village at Sandø was moved to a location far east. Geologists from the University of Copenhagen have been to the Faroe Islands to search for minerals and oil. On Suðuroy they found zinc and copper reserves. A large reserve of oil was found under Gulasjeftir and Trylleskov Villages north of Thorshavn, Streymoy Island. Far north of Thorshavn on Streymoy Island, a village named Fjalldal, has emerged around a cement factory.

We got a quite harsh note from Minister's Secretary Frederik von Scholten. As it has come to the knowledge of his majesty, that many groups of citizens on Fareo, was complaining. In Thorshavn, the upper-class woman complained about the prices on sewing machines, the men about the prices on rum, if it was possible to even get any decent drinks at all, as also brændevin and beer saw unstable deliveries and high prices in the Capital City. In Carolineborg, the upper-class complained about the high prices on good winter clothes. Working class needed bread in Sandavágur Town and so on. All this, according to von Scholten, mainly due to incompetent logistics and an inadequate trade system between the islands. Frederik von Scholten demanded that we would improve on those issues immediately. To top this rather bad news, we got an outbreak of cholera in Fishermans Neighborhood, Thorshavn. After a month’s hard work, we replied that all issues were solved. Hoping it would stay that way, at least for some time.

Upper class women in Carolineborg are fascinated by the new autumn collection from Sandø.

    October 1811 (Old World)

The Danish chemist and physicist Hans Christian Ørsted, has been experimenting with machines able to generate electrical power from refined oil (*). He is now in Thorshavn, supervising the slow process of making this invention, beneficial for local industries.  The large village Gulasjeftir was demolished, and the people and industries moved north. Now located just south of Fjalldalá, a river that originates from Nordfjall. At the previous sitz of Gulasjeftir, oil is now extracted and refined. This new technology will surely demand for multiple changes to the city and villages. Relocating important production buildings, close to powerplants.

(*) off-course historically incorrect, H. C. Ørsted was a pioneer in discovery of electromagnetism, but generators able to run at oil products and generate serious power was invented much later, involving many other scientists.

    June 1812 (New World)

We received another message from Minister Secretary Frederik von Scholten regarding new demands from His Majesty. "His Royal Highness is concerned about the standard of living in the colonies. Where the vast majority live in miserable conditions with malnutrition and disease as a result." Minister Secretary Frederik von Scholten insisted that we build more and better houses and guarantee that the population has what is required of necessities to feel satisfied and well-treated. The first step in this direction was to expand the Sankt Louise settlement, construct “Louise Ladjia” boxing arena, a Town Hall, and a transport route delivering coffee from Saint Caroline.

    6KUrDDA.jpeg

Everything was done to fulfill Frederik von Scholten wishes in Sankt Louise, although the population still needed better sun protection than the straw hats they had. Luckily, Sankt Vilhelmine had the resources and knowledge to provide that. Focus now shifted to Sankt Vilhelmine. Sadly, while the production was about to be set up to produce nice felt hats, areas of Sankt Vilhelmine was hit by cholera. A lack of doctors on the island resulted in several fatal cases. To make things worse, the warehouses was out of bricks to build a very needed treatment facility. After some weeks finally the first load of hats was shipped to Sankt Louise and Saint Carolina, but the hospital was still not erected.

After being a trade city, relying mainly on import of most industrial goods, from Thorshavn and Skopun City. It was decided to construct an electrified industrial town in the otherwise rural village of Avedøre, to support some of Carolineborg’s needs locally. The production area was located at the east side of Suðuroy Island, as far from Carolineborg as possible, to prevent the pollution from reaching densely populated areas.

Carolineborg, although officially not the capital. Is now a lot larger than Thorshavn. With a population of 6600 people. A new type of upper-class people has emerged in the city. Taking the notation of higher upper class to a new level. These people have made fortunes in continental Europe, mainly in Copenhagen, but sometimes also in other large towns of Scandinavia or in the far east. Often successful factory owners or wise aristocrats with good investments in trade or industry. Now they just enjoy life, and live in large 6-7 story houses in Carolineborg's old town. Creating a wonderful social life for themselves and the most interesting artists and scientists of the city.
