The Tower of Song

Mambomumba: "A Rush of Blood to the Head" has a lot of great songs, too bad "X and Y" doesn't compare.

I have dulled The Knife to leave room for "Amber". Not a big 311 fan, to me a lot of their songs sound the same, but I really like "Amber." Too bad 311's most famous song appears to be their remake of "Love Song". That's sad.

Bob Dylan - Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
Barenaked Ladies - Never is Enough
Radiohead - Morning Bell
Ben Kweller - Jerry Falwell Destroyed Earth
Bright Eyes - At the Bottom of Everything
The White Stripes - Black Math
Coldplay - Warning Sign
Roger Miller - King of the Road
The Elected - The Bank And Trust
311 - Amber

Sproxxx:  do you mean the 10 songs that have been on the tower longest?  That's easily done.  Just clarify if that's what you mean and I'll do it.

Coldplay's out.  The only half-decent record they've got is Parachutes, and this does not appear to be a song from that record.

It's Flaming Lips time instead.  Everyone could use more Lips

Barenaked Ladies - Never is Enough
    Radiohead - Morning Bell
Ben Kweller - Jerry Falwell Destroyed Earth
Bright Eyes - At the Bottom of Everything
The White Stripes - Black Math
Roger Miller - King of the Road
The Elected - The Bank And Trust
    311 - Amber
    Pulp - Common People
The Flaming Lips - Shine On Sweet Jesus

I hate to delete something right away, but I never liked "Accidentally in Love" by the Counting Crows. They've got some good songs, but I never liked it. Instead I'll put a song that has some overtly political themes. 2.gif

    Radiohead - Morning Bell
Ben Kweller - Jerry Falwell Destroyed Earth
Bright Eyes - At the Bottom of Everything
The White Stripes - Black Math
Roger Miller - King of the Road
The Elected - The Bank And Trust

The Flaming Lips - Shine On Sweet Jesus
Dexys Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen

Radiohead aren't that good at maths, are they?

Removing the Midnight Runners and I'll add a new song by Stephin Merritt (Magnetic Fields) called Ukulele Me! It's on his new album, Showtunes.

    Radiohead - Morning Bell
Ben Kweller - Jerry Falwell Destroyed Earth
Bright Eyes - At the Bottom of Everything
The White Stripes - Black Math
Roger Miller - King of the Road
The Elected - The Bank And Trust
    Pulp - Common People
The Flaming Lips - Shine On Sweet Jesus

Here's the top 25.  Sort of strange, but I have the top 3 songs so far.  Maybe if a certain few people didn't always knock the top song off the tower there would be more competition.  Also, the shelf life for a song on the tower's getting shorter and shorter; for a song to pass 15 posts is enough of an honor now, where at the beginning 20 posts was not uncommon.

    tp257jc.jpg

Dfnva - I know it's too late but it was the Kid A version of the song.  I just love the odd time.  I've never heard a bad song in 5/4.  Never realized you asked.

I won't mess with Johnny Cash, I'll remove Bright Eyes.

Ben Kweller - Jerry Falwell Destroyed Earth
The White Stripes - Black Math
Roger Miller - King of the Road
The Elected - The Bank And Trust
    Pulp - Common People
The Flaming Lips - Shine On Sweet Jesus
    Radiohead - 2 + 2 = 5
    Stephin Merritt - Ukulele Me!
Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues.
    Bloc Party - Helicopter

Pickled Pig: That's one of the reasons I like Radiohead so much... they're pretty daring with things.... time signatures, chord progressions, other nuances and effects, which maybe sound odd or too musically intense to a lot of people, but being the musical geek I am (I guess that's why I'm a music teacher) I dig it.

Ben Kweller - Jerry Falwell Destroyed Earth
The White Stripes - Black Math
Roger Miller - King of the Road
The Elected - The Bank And Trust
The Flaming Lips - Shine On Sweet Jesus
    Radiohead - 2 + 2 = 5
    Stephin Merritt - Ukulele Me!
Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues.
    Bloc Party - Helicopter
    REM - Shiny Happy People

I think I'll take out "Common People" and replace with "Shiny Happy People," one of my favorite REM songs, it just sounds a lot like a 60's-era peace/love/etc. song, kind of like the Mamas and the Papas or The Byrds.

    Stephin Merritt - Ukulele Me!

Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues.

    Bloc Party - Helicopter

    REM - Shiny Happy People

    Bob Dylan - Hurricane

Painting over The White Stripes, adding more blatantly political Dylan. Sorry. I really do love that song, though.

Bloc Party! One of my favourites. Thought about adding one of them myself, but if I do now, people would go with the "two songs by same artist-picking out system" so I'll just add Franz instead.

Ben Kweller - Jerry Falwell Destroyed Earth
Roger Miller - King of the Road
The Elected - The Bank And Trust
The Flaming Lips - Shine On Sweet Jesus
    Radiohead - 2 + 2 = 5
    Stephin Merritt - Ukulele Me!
    Bloc Party - Helicopter
    REM - Shiny Happy People
    Bob Dylan - Hurricane
Franz Ferdinand - You're The Reason I'm Leaving

Roger Miller - King of the Road

The Elected - The Bank And Trust

The Flaming Lips - Shine On Sweet Jesus

    Radiohead - 2 + 2 = 5

    Stephin Merritt - Ukulele Me!

Open Skies - David Crowder Band

Removing the elected, inserting the David Crowder Band. Also...great list, PP! Would you be willing to sort it by username shortly and add up some points and see what players are the top 5...? Might be too hard for you, if so, that's fine.

To be honest, Shiny Happy People is not REM's best.  But I won't mess with it and replace it with a song from Life's Rich Pageant yet.  First I must take out the garbage...

In comes one of my favorite Sufjan Stevens instrumentals...

Roger Miller - King of the Road
The Flaming Lips - Shine On Sweet Jesus
    Radiohead - 2 + 2 = 5
    Stephin Merritt - Ukulele Me!
    Bloc Party - Helicopter
    REM - Shiny Happy People
    Bob Dylan - Hurricane
Franz Ferdinand - You're The Reason I'm Leaving
Open Skies - David Crowder Band
Sufjan Stevens - Redford (For Yia-Yia and Pappou)

Actually, it does take quite a while to do the ranking thing.  But the reason I use excel is so I can easily sort it by whatever I wish.  I can get you your averages/totals for all the players and post them here, dev.

If we decided to have an end date of this tower - and scores/awards presented after the end - this is how I would do it:

-Top 5 songs by # of posts
-Member with highest # of points, member with lowest # (out of regular posters only to be fair, member must have contributed a certain amount to the tower - probably 5 times or more - that will be decided later.  If it's decided to be more fair I can do averages instead of totals.  Each mathod has its +s and -s.)
-Band with highest average, band with lowest average. (we know what the lowest average is, right? 4.gif)

Mambomumba: I really like that whole Franz Ferdinand album, a lot of good songs on it.

The Flaming Lips - Shine On Sweet Jesus
    Radiohead - 2 + 2 = 5
    Bloc Party - Helicopter
    REM - Shiny Happy People
    Bob Dylan - Hurricane
Franz Ferdinand - You're The Reason I'm Leaving
Open Skies - David Crowder Band
