What should I do starting out?

I haven't had a chance to play yet but can anyone tell me when I start lets say on a flat region I've heard you shouldn't just make one big city but make like two or three. My question is the other cities you make are they different land areas on a different map that you just connect via highway and aiport or are they just on another tile.

Welcome and hopefully can have a good start with neighborhood based regions.

the cities also have to be touching one another. you can't connect two cities that don't share a common border.
