STEX Real-World Classification project

I just came up with the idea for a project I was thinking of starting. Seeing as there are so many requests for real-world buildings or buildings from a particular city, I thought it would be nice to create a database of the actual structures already created, sorted by city.

I know it would take a while, due to the amount of buildings, but it would be worthwhile once done.

Of course, to tackle such a project would require some assistance, so I was wondering whether anyone wouldbe willing to help me?

I won't be able to offer any help in the project, as I am way too busy, but this is a fantastic idea, and one that would help people a lot.

Also, may I suggest a sister project, whereby real-world companies are databased? It would be slightly more complex and huge to pull off, but would offer huge benefits.

Great idea! Everything I've done with exception of HK Residential Tower Pack I & II is a real Hong Kong building! Just look under bixel, and my partner Paulvmontfort. Also check out Sparkythepeguin, k5drax, JtPortland, Simgoober, Debussyman, Xannepann, and SYM Productions for 'real world buildings'. (I may not have spelled all names correctly.) I'm also missing quite a few I know.

[edit] Perhaps a semi-official thread could be made (here) with the Building listed, and the BATter so that it is easily downloadable. And also perhaps any weir facts and trivia associated by the building commented by the BATter! If possible!

I love coffee and buildings.

Fader: The companies classification would also be viable, and may be a project to follow this one.

Bixel: Thanks for the information, and I may look into some of those ideas, especially the links portion.

I have been working my way through the commercial buildings section of the STEX, pulling out the real buildings, and putting them into an excel file. So far I have gone through page 34, and have 52 buildings.

The progress so far is attached, in a text version.

    Sweet!

Careful going through the STEX Landmark BATs catagory, since some BATters upload buildings there that are not real buildings but are called Landmarks because of the functionality of the building.

    I love coffee and buildings.

As I've been going through, I've only added buildings I know are real, or that state the location of the actual structure, or that they are a repllica. The latter I will have to put a little bit of extra research into, but luckily only a couple have arisen so far.

I'll be sure to keep everyone updated on my progress.

Great Idea can't wait till you finish but, something to make it look more organized would make it into a table either using microsoft word or something like that or something like this.

    Building                                Creator                City                            Country
Herald and Weekly Times       Deadwoods          Melbourne                   Australia
Edifico Italia                          wolf_pt                Sao Paulo                    Brazil
    etc.
I only did two for sake of time. Great Job so far44.gif

Yes, that's exactly what I have been doing. Just in order to post the file as an attachment, I could only get it into .txt format. I have it stored as an excel file, which make organization much, much easier.

But thanks anyways, I appreciate any assistance.

Just an update, with elbarto's help, at last count we have progressed through portions of the commercial and landmark lots, and so far have a total of 193 buildings.

And there's still quite a ways to go, so wish us luck.

paulvmontfort: As this time I'm just organizing them within the list first by country, then city, and lastly the name. I may consider adding a R, C, I, etc category at a later point.

VDK: Hmm, interesting concept. i may have to go and add an automata section later for both trams, busses, and trains released so that members know if their chosen city's transit does exist. As for the html, that may work to keep the format intact when converting from Excel. Thanks for the tip.

OK, just to show a version of the format I'm using, and to show the point to which I've reached, I'm attaching an .html version of the Excel document so that it keeps its format.
