Dam collapses in Brazil

It was some days ago around 100 km from my city. 'Fortunately', there were few people in the most affected area, around 600 inhabitants, but that's still a big tragedy. Imagine a 15 meters toxic mud wave in your direction D:

Tragic.  One is forced to ask whether the dams were monitored.  News reports here say that this was due to unusual rainfall.

Tragic indeed . In most instances , corporations don't do anymore than they have to . They figure "let's do it fast , time is money" and "it's good enough for now" never looking at possible scenarios . And from the pictures shown , it wasn't a village of mansions was it . And anybody believe they will be compensated properly . No matter what they receive it will not bring back the dead or missing .

Unusual rainfall ? I guess this didn't happen near the Rainforest . It must be a sunny and dry part of Brazil I'm unaware of . My heart goes out to those "poor" people that have to deal with this mess . I imagine their farms will be a total loss . Would you want to eat the produce that land will likely grow in the future . Can you imagine how toxic that mud is ? If it wasn't they wouldn't need to dam it , would they ?

One wonders what this dam was holding back if was near a mine.

Reports say the contaminants are mostly iron salts.  Sounds like a mining operation to me.

Sounds like what happens in the US when a coal slurry impoundment dam gives out, which is promptly followed by the consequences being borne by the taxpayer.

The dam served only to store water and mineral traces. As Raynev said, if what was there was not toxic, then the dam was unnecessary. The dam site is not near forests, the Amazon is far north. Our state's climate is comparable to Southern California and in recent months we had almost no rain, so I guess that was not due to the large volume of water. On the same day there were tremors around 2.7 on the Richter scale near the site, but according to experts it would not be enough to break the dam. There were inspections two months before the accident and was all right. So this accident for now remains a mystery, or companies, that are the largest mining companies in the world, are using their influence so that the truth does not come up.
Have been found so far 6 bodies. 3 of missing persons have been found alive, probably fled and were lost. There are dozens of missing yet.
