As far as a Trump presidency goes, can't the Electoral College prevent that if they choose?  I gather that they are the real presidential electors and that the public vote is merely a popularity contest.  I have a faint recollection of the Electoral College picking someone who didn't run.

If they did that there would be legislation on the floor of congress the next day to get rid of the electoral college.

Electors are selected by the political parties. So sure, while you cross off at Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton you are actually voting for electors selected by their respective parties.

And while there are no federal regulations concerning the elector's selection of his chosen candidate, state law may prevent him for selecting at whim.

Consider how MPs in many countries are constitutionally protected to vote as they see fit, but risk jeopardising their party membership if they break the whip.

With the spinelessness of republicans and their discount price, no.  There are still a few more holdouts, but selling out principles is what the GOP is all about - come November if there are more than a nominal few I would be deeply surprised.

Such would hardly be the worst effect of a Trump presidency.  Actually a rather positive start if I may say so.

Is not the Electoral College embedded in the Constitution?  I don't think Congress can amend the Constitution without the acquiescence of the states.

You can guarantee there will be hoopla about the Electoral College no matter who wins. Got a feeling this is going to be a close one like Bush vs Gore in 2000.

but if they actually chose someone else rather then one of the 2 candidates ? that's a bit different  then a few not voting according to party lines or going against the popular election results.

Maybe they'll accidentally elect Donald L Trump instead.

    http://nypost.com/2015/07/26/meet-donald-trump-no-the-other-one/

(BTW, I've known this man has the same name and roughly who he was, but it was nigh impossible to locate the info exactly thanks to search results being flooded by news of a far more annoying Donald Trump.)

Or, maybe Barry Sanders will get the nod instead?

Trump may well trump Hillary, but the question is will the DNC choose Hillary or Bernie?  Hillary has too much baggage.

The DNC has already chosen Hillary but they would be wise to consider Sanders. The Trump campaign has a whole playbook on how to beat Hillary and they've just started. Sanders would not be so easy 'cause there isn't really any dirt on him. It would make the debates and discussion much more policy oriented, I think.

Trump wouldn't be able to withstand Sanders in a live TV debate. His campaign is built on some 19th century republican values, not upon what a 21st century country needs.

And that's progressive politics that take care of a country's social system instead of letting it fall apart.

I wish the republicans had 19th century values.  If they did, maybe I'd be somewhat inclined to support them.  Right now they're like some unholy hellspawn of LBJ, Hitler and Jerry Falwell.

Wasn't a republican party, or America in the 17th century. 18th century values, the values enshrined in the bill or rights and constitution, are the bedrock of your country. The Republican party was founded in 1854. The first Republican president was Lincoln (1861).

I think he might mean the "old" GOP, back before the politic shifts of the 50s where the GOP became more conservative than the Dems (remember that for the day one supporter of one of the parties tries to sully the opposite party using their pre-WW2 values). I don't actually know. "I don't get it" isn't very helpful.

Or he doesn't know what he's talking about.

By now, the republican way of politics would lead USA to a nation of 5% very rich people and 95% working poor. Being a working poor might be a little better than being a slave, but not much. At least you could own your own personal GUN. Maybe even through partial state funding to keep the gun industry going!

What do slaves have to do with Republicans?
