Anyone else playing Democracy 3?

Sounds interresting :)

I'll take a look at some gameplay videos

I'd love it more if you could also build a city, wage war on other players, etc..

That would be the ultimate city builder game! To build a city like Simcity4 or Cities Skylines, to make war like in Command and Conquer or Age of empires, something around that (Anno 2070/2205/1404/... are the closes example to that so far), which in turn would be connected to your city/country's economy and resources (both natural and people resources) to build a high tech army or whatever.. and to also influence other countries' politics and also yours like in Democracy (maybe a little simpler) and be able to choose a regime or build a hybrid one... Well that would very VERY fun! I'd pay anything for a game like that!

I recently got it on the GOG sale.

I suck at it so much.

Also, a lot of that game makes no sense. For example, I had an asthma epidemic which was caused by excessive car usage in the country. So, I tried to fix that and I go over to see what increases car usage. Turns out giving tax breaks for people who buy clean cars (electric/hybrid) gives a boost to car usage. So literally, the way to fix my asthma epidemic was to get rid of an incentive for clean cars.

Also, I constantly end up in some financial downward spiral because the world economy tanks. That causes my GDP to tank, which causes tax income to get worse, which causes my credit rating to drop, which raises interests, which makes my debt problem even worse which in turn makes my credit rating even worse. But if I try to raise taxes it only makes things even worse. Its rather clear that according to the game the only viable political model is some extreme neo liberal model of low taxes and an absolutely minimal government.

In fact I do.

I don't play it as much as I used to (due to SC4 and C:SL).

Anyone else playing this little beauty of a game?

If only there was someway to tie this, SC4 and Civilization together into one super-sim...

Yeah, simulators are my kind of game, especially that kind of sim.

Whoa, cool! I came to this section just looking to see if Democracy 3 was in here. :)

See, last weekend I was sorting thru some comps I'd picked up at garage sales over the summer and I found one that had all the parts inside it should have but it wouldn't boot or beep and just spun the fans. My first step when that's what I'm seeing is to pull all the ram out and then turn it on to see if I can get it to cry (beep, beeeeeep, beep or such) and it did. That told me one or more of those sticks were bad. It had a pair of 1gbs and a pair of 512s so I put the 1gbs in slots 1 & 2 and then it booted up to XP Home. Next I did the Run --> msconfig and disabled a bunch of junk it didn't need to be loading on startup. Rebooted and started exploring what it had tucked away on its 80gb Sata hard drive. Besides Civ IV & V it has Democracy 3. I started it and was faced with about a zillion icons. As I moved the mouse over them they started shooting each other with red and green lasers! :O

I then did a silly thing and read the 13 page manual it has and started playing the US. I got assassinated before the end of my first term. o.O Then I tried again, but I set the difficulty, apathy, and both tendencies to 0%. I also started setting it to no term limit so I could keep experimenting. I won that time. (Mostly I wanted to get a feel for how it all worked.) My next game I set difficulty and apathy to 50% and left the tendencies at their default 100%. I must have feline genes in me cause after a few more times getting shot or blown up I'm still alive. ;)

Well to make a short story even longer, I'm now playing on 100% difficulty with the other 3 set at their defaults of 58% apathy and 100% for each innate belief. I started keeping notes of what I did as a played. One thing I noticed is one doesn't always start with the same amount of Political Capital from the advisors, er, ministers. If the total is 22 or more on the first turn I've found a sequence of policy changes and additions that always gets me re-elected and I end my second term with 90+ popularity. In that time I've solved all but one of the major problems and I'm pretty sure I've learned enough to accomplish everything in two terms in office.

The most important step I've learned is to get a positive cash flow going immediately that's sufficient to weather the storm when the global economy goes into deep recession. The most recent game I finished this morning I had 82% of the popular vote of the 59% who participated for my reelection after 4 years and 99% of the 94% who voted wanted me to stay in for a 3rd term. I'm not going to keep going on that game. I want to do the best in just 8 years, but I'll still set it to no term limit so I can see how a 3rd election goes.

I haven't played my SimCity 4 farm region all week cause I'm kind of addicted to this for now. :whatevs:

Here's the strategy I used for my most recent game using all the default settings except no term limit where I had 26 points in capital at the start. (Do note it's not perfected yet. I feel I could do things a bit better in a different order, but I'm still learning.)

Turn 1:  (start with 26 pts)

  • Enact Race Discrimination Act and set to max. (2 pts),
  • Open Prisons policy (not the private ones) and raise funding to max. (7 pts)
  • Save 17 pts

Turn 2:  (received 26 pts)

  • Enact Flat Tax and set to 60%. (43 pts)

Turn 3: (received 24 pts)

  • Lower Income Tax to minimum (7 pts)
  • Lower Sales Tax to minimum (9 pts)
  • Enact Community Policing and set to max (1 pt)
  • Enact Enterprise Investment and set to max (7 pts)

Turn 4: (Credit rating is now AAA and running a 446.86 bn surplus, recieved 25 pts)

  • Raise Police Force funding to max (4 pts)
  • Raise Food Standards Agency to max (2 pts)
  • Enact Telecommuting and set to max (2 pts)
  • Save 17 pts

Turn 5: (recieved 23 pts)

  • Enact Carbon Tax and set to max (39 pts)
  • Save 1 pt

Turn 6: (received 22 pts)

  • Raise Legal Aid to max (7 pts)
  • Raise Jury Trial to max (8 pts)
  • Raise Intelligence Services to max (7 pts)
  • Save 1 pt

Turn 7: (Antisocial problem ended. Received 21 pts.)

  • Enact Adult Education (12 pts)
  • Save 10 pts

Turn 8: (received 20 pts)

  • Enact Youth Club Subsidies (9 pts)
  • Save 21 pts

Turn 9: (received 17 pts)

  • Enact Mortgage Tax Relief (31 pts)
  • Save 7 pts

Turn 10: (received 19 pts)

  • Raise State Schools to max (18 pts)
  • Raise Science Funding to max (6 pts)
  • Save 2 pts

Turn 11: (received 19 pts)

  • Do nothing
  • Save 21 pts

Turn 12: (High Productivity achieved, received 17 pts)

  • Raise Petrol Tax to 46% (36pts) In hindsight I feel this should go to 29% cause way later it will cause a Petrol Protest and 29% will not.
  • Save 2 pts

Turn 13: (Public Service minister resigned, recieved 15 pts)

  • Hire a 4.9 minister with Trade Union / Socialist sympathies
  • Enact State Housing and set to max (13 pts)
  • Save 4 pts

Turn 14: (received 20 pts)

  • Enact Child Benefits (18 pts)
  • Enact Welfare Fraud (4 pts)
  • Save 2 pts

Turn 15: (received 19 pts)

  • Enact Marriage Tax Allowance and set to max (21 pts)

Turn 16: (Internet Economy Takes Off, Skill Shortage Ends, received 19 pts)

  • Enact Free Eye Tests (8 pts)
  • Enact Free School Meals (10 pts)
  • Save 1 pt

Election Results:

  • 49% Me
  • 10% Other party
  • 41% Did not vote
  • (Won 82% of the 59% turnout)
  • Credit rating: AAA
  • Interest rate: 1.70%
  • Debt/GDP ratio: 0.00%
  • Reserves: 10,666.36 Bn
  • Surplus: 744.51 Bn per Qtr

I won't go on with what I did the 2nd term as I would now do things a wee bit differently in the 1st cause I had to waste time and points countering the Petrol Protest I created and I feel some other polices might appease the ministers better and my points per turn wouldn't drop so fast.

For anyone who's read this far, I hope you find this useful.

:)

Nice to have another political manipulator on the site. There are some epic mods available for this game, Industry Redux and the Heritage Check System are two of my favourites, just for simulating the kind of stuff real world capitalists live in abject fear of.
