Go game go!

It definitely deserves it.  I hope the sales are sustained and that they pour more resources into it.  Keep the momentum going.

Great news! I'll be buying the game in a couple of days time.

Dear sir/madam/whoever will read this!

This profile is now defunct.

Computer problems and issues with accessing my Imageshack account meant My SC4 CJ Scrapbook was lost and utterly irretrievable. This setback put me off SC4 for many months.

Apologies for the inconvenience and for the lost pictures.

But that SC4 itch did not go away and it had to be scratched! I have started afresh with a new account here- The British Sausage

The URS is a spiritual successor to the SC4 CJ Scrapbook.

With this update this will be the last time I visit my original Simtropolis account- admin/mods feel free to remove it or do whatever you need to do. I have no further use for the Ln X (BLANKBLANK) account.

With regards, Miles Saunders-Priem aka. Ln X aka. The British Sausage

    250,000 copies x € 30,- ........that's a whopping 7.5 Million Euros!

I guess they will have a return on their investment.   :D

More importantly, this means they will have enough money to continue developing, fixing and adding to the game (you know: trams, above ground metro, in-game terrain editor and more of that).

They don't pocket the full amount.

Valve takes a 30% cut which is $/€2,250,000 roughly.

If SimCity 2013 can sell 1.1 million copies in the first two weeks and they had such a horrible launch fiasco, what is stopping Cities: Skylines from getting 750,000 more copies sold in 3 months? The reviews of this game are overwhelmingly positive. The numbers behind the economy at large show that it is supposedly recovering (but I think it will turn out to be a double dip recession, but that is a different story...)

Simcity 2013 has brand name, hype, lots of press coverage, a good sized marketing campaign, product promotion with popular TV shows, product promotion with brand name products, and a huge backlash to end it all.

It even had a decent sized retail push in NA and EU.

Cities: Skylines could become a rolling success due to word of mouth.

Very few sites have picked up on Cities: Skylines outside of a few Simcity fan forums.

It's even got the highest metacritic score of any game period within the last 90 days, same goes for user score.

Colossal Order went from a hardly known company to a well known one within a couple of weeks!

Yeah, the advertising juggernaut that is EA really pumped up SimCity.  If Colossal Order had that type of marketing and publication behind them, they would probably be blowing past SimCity already.

I think that their next Cities Skylines game release will likely blow SimCity out of the water.  They are building a huge word of mouth and dedicated fan base.  They are focused on their customers.  So we will all be excited about Cities: Skylines 2.  I think that game will be mind blowing.

Cities Skylines 2? Are you for real? The game dropped less than 48 hours ago and your blathering on about CS 2? Get a grip! The dev are committed to THIS game- the solid foundation was delivered on March 10th. They will now refine and expand this game over a number of years- that's the plan. It will be around for a long time. Rome wasn't built in a day... Don't hold your breath for CS2 'cos 10 years is a long time...

I'd be pretty surprised if we didn't get a sequel within 5 years.  They were pretty fast with CIM2 and it took them 2-3 years to make this one.

I have seen it advertised quite a bit on mainstream gaming sites, and lots of really positive reviews, so I think it's picking up some steam.

A lot of people who were on the fence waiting to see, who were maybe distrustful after SC5, are probably starting to buy into it.

The game is already being pirated at double digit percents according to Paradox on Twitter.

Well, the Sims 2 sold a ton of copies and was pirated in the mid-high double digits percentage within days and some calculate it as one of the most pirated games of all time but also one of EA's most profitable games. Cities: Skylines is being pirated in the low double digits percentage. If Colossal Order patches often and offers perks for registered users and never offers its patches elsewhere than Steam, then piracy rate will remain under 1/5 (while Sims 2 was at one point around 1/3). The reddit for Cities:Skylines is far higher than the reddit for SimCity, Cities XL, and Cities XXL combined. Word of mouth is spreading the popularity of this game more effective than expensive marketing for garbage.

    --Ocram

FYI: Sims, Cities XL, and a couple general gaming fan-site fora picked up on Cities: Skylines as well.

It's been in the Top 10 games played on Steam since its launch.  It's been one of the fastest growing non-default reddits (3-4 days in a row now), and the reddit sub has over 40,000 subscribers.

IGN, PC Gamer, Game Informer, Escapist Magazine, PC World (which was carried by MacWorld), Gaming Nexus, Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Lazy Game Reviews, Inc Gamers, Gamestyle, PC Games, GameWatcher, GameSpot, have all given it positive reviews, and those are some of the top mainstream gaming websites.

As a matter of fact, out of the 23 critic reviews on Metacritic, not a single one was mixed or negative.  That's pretty rare.

Cities: Skylines is getting a lot more notice than you think, and it's positive notice.

Good reviews and publicity  don't regularly translate into sales.

If that was all that was needed to sell a game Bayonetta 2 would have flown of the shelves by now.

(It has a massive internet and social media backlash from being a Nintendo exclusive and received great reviews).

There is a very long list of critically acclaimed games that failed to sell.

You really need mainstream appeal and accessibility.

City Simulators lack both of them.

Sure, but it doesn't equate to mainstream appeal.

Simcity has never had mainstream appeal, the only two Simcity titles to break 3M sales are Simcity 3000 and Simcity 2013.

Simcity and Cities: Skylines are as niche as Most Nintendo's games, Most of Sony's games, and most Japanese games in general (yeah most Japanese games no longer sell well in the West).

Even Street Fighter struggles to maintain mainstream appeal these days.

A game with low mainstream appeal would be Take 2's NBA game, Sony's GT series,  Lego games, Just Dance series, etc...

A game with mid mainstream appeal are Pokemon, Mass Effect, BioShock, Halo, Destiny, Mortal Kombat, Final Fantasy, etc....

A game with high mainstream appeal are Call of Duty, GTA, Assassins Creed, EA Sports, etc...

Just because a game doesn't have enough mainstream appeal (must be designed for the mainstream), or sell enough to break into the main stream (MineCraft, Pokemon, Mario), doesn't make it bad.

It just means it's not popular with the majority of consumers.

The next big Steam sale is at the end of June, if they put the game on sale it could sell through the roof.

Though it doesn't mean people will play it...

I think our definitions of "mainstream" differ.  You don't have to sell tens of millions of copies to be considered low/med/high mainstream, it's not ranked by sales or even low/med/high.  That idea seems silly to me.

I grew up with SimCity as a household name, it very much is/was a mainstream brand.  It was on just about every single computer in school from elementary to HS.  Mothers played it.  Dads played it.  Kids played it.  My uncle taught me how to play it.  Hardcore players grew a rabid fanbase. These were both hardcore fans mixed with normal joe shmoe's who didn't play games like Call of Duty or GTA or even Mario or games at all.  That's the definition of a mainstream game, one that appeals to a large audience.

SimCity is just as mainstream as Call of Duty or Halo, MineCraft, Mario or Lego games. Their sales numbers don't dictate their rank as a mainstream title.  There is no rank, it either is or isn't mainstream.  It's about brand identity and the audience that they capture, not ranking them by sales #'s.

Cities:Skylines has sold over 500,000 in a week.  That is a LARGE audience, one that is breaching beyond its niche.  I've seen MANY people on gaming forums that don't play this type of game pick it up.  My uncle who hasn't touched SimCity since 2000 is now interested in jumping back in after me geeking out about it on facebook.  When you can bring both your fans of the genre and those who don't typically play these games together, you've officially brought your game into the mainstream.

My gut feeling is that Cities Skylines is going to sell steadily in the next couple of years, it won't be explosive growth that rapidly tapers off. But it will be a steadily growing presence for fans of city simulators. The vast body of mods already available is truly staggering and have already vastly improved the core game, I can't even imagine the extent of CS's transformation in a couple of years time with patches, expansion packs and mods from the community.

CS is a game that is designed to last, endure and be remembered. Just like SC4 is. There is the Dark Side of the Moon analogy where DSOTM remained in the top 100 charts for 14 consecutive years steadily selling and with its legacy only growing with each passing year. SC4 is kind of like that and I believe CS will have a similar, if not greater, legacy in the city builder genre.
