Traffic and how to deal with it

Hey guys, seems CS is really about managing traffic and keeping commute times low to prevent abandonment.

Here is a pic of the (default) interchange which connects my city. Traffic is hitting real hard over there.

I don't want to expand that way (or at least not in the near future).

The problem isn't my connection within the city but just that interchange :P

I had the same thing happen in my city. Expanding out that way and setting up another connection into the city (I eventually crossed over for zoning anyway) helped it out a little bit, but now I have two incoming connections that are clogged. I am wondering if the small ramp is the problem and I need to figure out how to make a 6 lane ramp.

But I think the main issue is the single connection into the city. Everything is trying to get in through that one connection. I'm going to try to figure out how to make a good parallel/adjacent service road system (like the more modern western half of the USA seems to have) with many exits. Maybe that will help.

You can use almost any type of road as ramp, best are the one way roads of course.

I don't want to expand that way and it's the only connection in the close area :O

One way roads and traffic circles help a good deal.

Also remember noise pollution will also cause zone abandonment too.

I have ~20k and have minimal traffic issues with the highway thanks to the 6-lane one way in and 6 lane one way out.

They both connect to the large traffic circle which all my main roads branch off from.

Once you hit 20k your city explodes :O Money flow is insane. I'll need to rearrange some buildings for proper traffic.

Fixed a problem this way too:

I've set a small district on the ramp that prevents haevy traffic from using it, worked well :D

Having played around with Cities in Motion 2 quite a lot I learned that the main thing to do is to avoid bottlenecks, its not so much about the width of the road but the amount of waiting at lights which kills things.

An ideal way to fix the above, for example, would be to get the next door tile and build another freeway offramp from the main route straight to the industry zone, meaning you now have two intersections to cram all that traffic through instead of one, for example.

The only time that I had traffic probs is in the beginning of my first city - and the only problem was how crazy the amount of traffic going to and from the cargo freight station was. To me it seems like sticking to very small industrial zones and satisfying the demand with office is the way to go. I also couldn't keep up with garbage and was using so much more power.

I replaced that whole section in the top middle with office and kept just that one section in the upper left and I'm actually kind of wishing that I had more traffic. :D  looks better now anyway, those industrial areas are a real eyesore in this game.

If too many passenger, aren't it just crowd congestion at the station rather than miles of train stuck on the rail line?

How many inhabitants did you have when this problem appeared? Did you keep the "standard" train (the one the game sends in from outside of the city) away from your city tracks?

I keep freight and passenger lines strictly separated, and my city passenger train lines are not connected to the outside train net. A single passenger line seems to be able to saturate a single track.

Edit: By the way, most Cities in Motion games needed mods that had capacities of public transport vehicles multiplied by 5-10 to run smoothly. I guess the developers know that you can put only very few people in one house, but they seem to shy away from the image of  skyscrapers with 15 people and buses with a capacity of 120 people, although that seems to work with a 1:1 traffic simulation with a compressed overall time scale where half of all people are on the road at the same time.

Using road layers is the best way I've found to control traffic so far in my city building career.

Here's how it works, keep in mind this city has no public transport.

Everything is flexible and works as long as it stays within it's own road layer.

It's also important to avoid making too many exits inside your populated areas.

I usually make 4 connections, one on each sides of my area.

I hope this made sense to anyone.

If you are having problems with the trains, check your tracks are efficient, for the most part segregating the main freight and passenger lines is necessary to stop everything clogging up.

I'm also noticing some trains don't enter the stations unless their "preferred" platform is available, whilst it sits waiting, things back up behind it. Not sure why as both sides have cross-tracks, I'm not totally convinced the trains work perfectly right now.

@REV3NG3 So, do you build all of you roads first in a city, or just the main ones?  That seems like a good way to go about it.  Do you do that when you have enough money and are expanding, or do you that even with your first city?

Start by making your 4 lanes roads, build neighborhoods insides the quadrants like I did above and connect it directly to your highway.

Then, once you start making money, you'll be able to easily incorporate the missing road layers into the mix.
