Hobbits

Are Hobbits real? Short people who are in the legends may as well have existed in ancient times.

Ebu Gogo is a human-like creature (or race of creatures) which appears in the mythology of the people of the island of Flores, Indonesia, of similar form to the leprechaun or elf. These “little people” are said to be about one meter tall, covered in hair, pot-bellied and with ears that stick out. They are held to walk somewhat awkwardly and are often said to be “murmuring” in what is assumed to be their own language. It is also said by the islanders that the Ebu Gogo can repeat what is said to them in parrot-like fashion.

In 2003, Australian and Indonesian scientists unearthed a tiny hominin that is now referred to as the “Hobbit of Flores.” Since that time, more of these hobbits, which researchers say were members of a species they have named Homo floresiensis, have been found. The scientists dated the time these hobbits lived on earth. They were not our ancestors, according to floresiensis experts. They were a distinctly different species that walked this earth at the the same time as modern man. Much like the hobbits in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, the real-life hobbits are believed to be now-extinct “relatives” of Homo sapiens.

Homo sapiens lived simultaneously with other species of early humans in the human family tree. The Smithsonian features an interactive timeline of human evolution that includes our ancestors and our “distant cousins.” Unlike other early human species, the hobbits shared the earth with humans for well over 75,000 years and were here with us as recently as 12,000 years ago, according to Science 2.0. One paper, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) last year contested the claims that the hobbits were actually another species of hominins. In that paper, the hobbits of Flores were said to be merely an early example of Down’s syndrome, Inquisitr reported. That paper enraged scientists around the world, though.

Hobbits are fictional characters who resemble the Irish peasant of the 19th century, and the researches quoted were probably unknown to Tolkien.  Most of Tolkien's races came out of the Celtic legends, and the Book of Kells.

Somehow, notwithstanding fossil evidence, I doubt the little people discovered in the far east had the kind of personalities attributed to the inhabitants of the Shire in the Third Age of Middle Earth.  They were probably hunter-gatherers whose lives were short, dark and ugly.

Flores island also produced a species of small, cow-sized elephants as well as giant rats. Remains of the rats have been dated to just a few thousand years ago. It's entirely possible that they still exist, although no evidence supports that. The "hobbits," the little elephants, and the big rats all shared the island at one time. Just imagine! A primitive society of little people, hunting ferocious giant rats and pygmy elephants. Then, one day, their island is invaded by us - a terrifying race of super genius giants! You can't make this stuff up!

Sounds rather like Australia in miniature with a different selection of species.

Apparently, hairy, pot-bellied gnomes/hobbits with elf ears do exist, or at least existed in some point in the not so distant past.

    2690648875_4e7aa12d81_m.jpg

People living around the volcano told him a consistent story of the hairy creatures that devoured whatever they could grasp in their long fingers. The villagers tolerated the stealing of food until the Ebu Gogo began to snatch babies and eat them too. They were driven away from human habitation and forced to seek refuge in the caves at Liang Bua. Some stories say that they were exterminated by the villagers who forced them out of the cave with bales of burning grass. Incidentally, at the very same caves, scientists have found seven dwarf skeletons belonging to Homo floresiensis that date back about 13,000 years ago. The people of Flores believe that the Ebu Gogo were alive at the time of the arrival of Portuguese trading ships over 400 years ago, and some hold that they survived as recently as 100 years ago but are now no longer seen.

    • There are many legends in Indonesia that are similar to the elf or leprechaun of Europe with the ebu gogo kidnapping human children, hoping to learn from them how to cook. The children always easily outwit the ebu gogo in the tales.
    • The legends relating to the Ebu Gogo were traditionally, according to the journal Nature, attributed to monkeys which do not exist on Flores but were known on other islands from where the current Flores population comes. These legends are somewhat detailed and, like Hawaii's menehunes, Scandinavia's tomtar and dwarfs, they may represent a folk memory of the island's previous inhabitants who were supplanted by the current population.
    • The discovery in 2003 on Flores of remains of a meter-tall humanoid, Homo floresiensis, suggests a more literal interpretation of the Ebu Gogo stories. H. floresiensis survived at least until 12,000 years ago and probably survived longer. However, the date of extinction of H. floresiensis is unknown.
    • Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman relates the tales of the Ebu Gogo to other "Proto-Pygmy" sightings from throughout south Asia. Within hominology, Coleman links these traditions to the survival of small, hairy humanoids, as noted in his book The Field Guide to Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates (NY: Anomalist Books, 2006), coauthored with Patrick Huyghe. The book's cover is illustrated with a drawing of the Ebu Gogo.
    • Archaeologists are planning further investigations of Flores, including caves where the Ebu Gogo are said to have lived recently, and thus may shed light on this question. The prospect that some hobbits still exist in pockets of thick, fertile jungle on Flores is extremely unlikely, says Douglas Hobbs, a member of the team that discovered Homo floresiensis.

Giants also apparently existed in the past.

    http://hubpages.com/hub/Did-Giants-Once-Walk-the-Earth

Genesis chapter 6 tells us, "There were giants in the earth in those days".   This one little verse says quite a lot.  What does God mean when he said there were "giants" here on Earth.  We have already seen how the pre-Flood world gave the ideal conditions for long life and huge growth, which we also know from the dinosaur, plant, insect and other fossils.  But what about humans?  We know the lived very long by the genealogies of Genesis (e.g. Adam lived 930 years).  Would they, too, continue to grow very large?

    1. Large bones in stone graves in Williamson County and White County, Tennessee. Discovered in the early 1800s, the average stature of these giants was 7 feet tall.

    2. Giant skeletons found in the mid-1800s in New York state near Rutland and Rodman.

    3. In 1833, soldiers digging at Lompock Rancho, California, discovered a male skeleton 12 feet tall. The skeleton was surrounded by caved shells, stone axes, other artifacts. The skeleton had double rows of upper and lower teeth. Unfortunately, this body was secretly buried because the local Indians became upset about the remains.

    4. A giant skull and vertebrae found in Wisconsin and Kansas City.

    5. A giant found off the California Coast on Santa Rosa Island in the 1800s was distinguished by its double rows of teeth.

    6. A 9-foot, 8-inch skeleton was excavated from a mount near Brewersville, Indiana, in 1879.

    7. Skeletons of "enormous dimensions" were found in mounds near Zanesville, Ohio, and Warren, Minnesota, in the 1880s.

    8. In Clearwater Minnesota, the skeletons of seven giants were found in mounds. These had receding foreheads and complete double dentition.

    9. At LeCrescent, Minnesota, mounds were found to contain giant bones. Five miles north near Dresbach, the bones of people over 8 feet tall were found.

    10. In 1888 seven skeletons ranging from seven to 8 feet tall were discovered.

    11. Near Toledo, Ohio, 20 skeletons were discovered with jaws and teeth "twice as large as those of present day people." The account also noted that odd hieroglyphics were found with the bodies.

    12. Miners in Lovelock Cave, California, discovered a very tall, red-haired mummy In 1911

    13. This mummy eventually went to a fraternal lodge where it was used for "initiation purposes."

    14. In 1931, skeletons from 8 1-2 to 10 feet long were found in the Humbolt lake bed in California.

    15. In 1932, Ellis Wright found human tracks in the gypsum rock at White Sands, New Mexico. His discovery was later backed up by Fred Arthur, Supervisor of the Lincoln National Park and others who reported that each footprint was 22 inches long and from 8 to 10 inches wide. They were certain the prints were human in origin due to the outline of the perfect prints coupled with a readily apparent instep.

    16. During World War II, author Ivan T. Sanderson tells of how his crew was bulldozing through sedimentary rock when it stumbled upon what appeared to be a graveyard. In it were crania that measured from 22 to 24 inches from base to crown nearly three times as large as an adult human skull. Had the creatures to whom these skulls belonged been properly proportioned, they undoubtedly would have been at least 12 feet tall or taller.

    17. In 1947 a local newspaper reported the discovery of nine-foot-tall skeletons by amateur archeologists working in Death Valley.

    18. The archeologists involved also claimed to have found what appeared to be the bones of tigers and dinosaurs with the human remains.

    inca_sculls.jpg   inca_scull.jpg

Five skulls were found that still exist in Ica, Peru, and Merida, Mexico. They have a brain cavity area ranging from 2200 CC to 3200 CC. Modern humans average 1450 CC
in size with the largest human skull to date at 1980 CC. All these skulls have Neanderthal (post-flood humans) characteristics. They are huge in size and come from an
unknown species according to science.  In fact according to science they do not exist at all but for the fact that they are viewable today.

Here's one for your "Forbidden Archaeology" file.Scientists are remaining stubbornly silent about a lost race of giants found in burial mounds near Lake Delavan, Wisconsin, in May 1912. The dig site at Lake Delavan was overseen by Beloit College and it included more than 200 effigy mounds that proved to be classic examples of 8th century Woodland Culture. But the enormous size of the skeletons and elongated skulls found in May 1912 did not fit very neatly into anyone's concept of a textbook standard. They were enormous. These were not average human beings.

    Strange Skulls

First reported in the 4 May 1912 issue of the New York Times the 18 skeletons found by the Peterson brothers on Lake Lawn Farm in southwest Wisconsin exhibited several strange and freakish features.

Their heights ranged between 7.6ft and 10 feet and their skulls "presumably those of men, are much larger than the heads of any race which inhabit America to-day." They tend to have a double row of teeth, 6 fingers, 6 toes and like humans came in differant races. The teeth in the front of the jaw are regular molars. Heads usually found are elongated believed due to longer than normal life span.

In the long scheme of things I am sure there are many genetic variations of hominid.  We shouldn't be too excited that modern science is now able to uncover these fossils.  Archeologists and paleontologist have not ceased being grave robbers.
