Game always freezes 20-30 mins into playing

Hey all, I'm sorry if someone has already answered this question elsewhere, I'm not real familiar with the whole forum thing. But I've been playing SimCity 4 on my mac for a while now, and as long as I've had the game, I'll be playing it for a while and all of a sudden I get the little spinning wheel that says its thinking and I can't do anything in the game. I've tried to wait it out, and it never gets back up and running. I always have to force quit the game, and then when I relaunch it, it usually says that it's already running on my computer so  I have to restart my macbook to start playing again. It never happens after anything specific, and I haven't found a solution in my search so far. Is anyone familiar with this glitch or have a solution?

Is this the Disc version, App Store Version, or Steam Version?

The other two versions should work fine, so you may want to see if the issue occurs without any plug-ins.
