So how do I increase wealth and population? I know you have to do parks and such to raise the wealth. And you need services to increase hapiness in the city. But with the limited space in a city. It just makes it so hard to do so. I would be tearing down buildings to place parks and you start off with a crappy amount of money.

$ Wealth residential holds the most sims (this is true for real life for the most part)

$$$ Wealth residential holds the least amount of sims

If you want maximum population you need to focus on being a low wealth city

If you want maximum wealth, you need to focus on land value, city services and education.

Though this city will have a lower population.

50,000 starting amount is the traditional starting amount in Simcity.

So you have to decide between high wealth and max population (this holds true in real life)

______________

If you have Cities of Tomorrow expansion pack, I suggest you download and install the mod from here that allows you to have 100 mega towers.

More cash early on:

When you have the tax controls (once you or someone else places a town hall in the region) up the taxes to 11% for a while.  You'll make more money - you'll have a little slower growth, but no one will complain or move out.

If you have built the financial addon for the town hall (or someone else has)  Set the taxes 12% 11%  9% (For low, medium and high wealth repectively), you'll make even more money, slower growth but no one will complain or move out.  (I'm always perplexed when the first addon people get for the town hall is the Police/Fire/Hospital addon.  Those things are expensive to place and expensive to maintain early on in the game)

Don't be afraid of taking out a loan.  The game does not hassle you with a credit rating, etc.  The $100,000 loan only costs ~$650 an ingame hour, and it gets a bit paid down every hour.  (Always leave one loan available incase you go bankrupt - at which point the game stops dead and tell you to fix it or leave.)

You either maximize population or wealth. Low wealth buildings hold more people than high wealth ones, and you don't have to raise land values to get high density buildings. You can pack about 1 million Sims into a city if you get all low wealth, high density towers.

What I usually place is the amphitheater and the large $$$ parks around my city. Then tall $$$ residential buildings will develop :).
