Any creative road layout tips?

I have been managing my traffic very well. Especially with the inclusion of NAM. Now I use the grid layout. But I don't want to do so anymore. And I can't jog my mind about how I want to spice things up. Where I want to put curves. Or where I need to have a grid layout. And where to have my avenues, streets, one way roads, normal roads and such.

SC4 is a grid-based game. Breaking away from the grid takes more effort than you think. You need a lot of creative thought.

Honestly it's all up to you. We can give pointers, but these are just our ideas.

For me, a good place to start is riverfronts. If you terraform a river with a bend (not straight), it will give you a place to start building diagonal and fractional angle roads. You can 'build in' from there. A similar technique can be applied with differences in elevation.

You can also use highways or 'districts' to create a curve that your roads can follow.

Some examples from one of my cities. Click for full size.

This may be shameless self promotion but if you want to see how I make road networks check out my 'building a city from scratch' video series. The first few parts focus on building roads prior to development.

Anyways hope this helps!

Terrain is always a good excuse for curved roads

Working around hills, rivers, valleys, esp. with a slope mod, is a great way to force yourself to use curvy roads.

@APSMS yes really unlevel terrain (and more importantly not using the smoothing tool or plains tool to flatten it) will force you to break the grid.

I just wish I could force myself to follow the terrain a bit more than I do, as I have a nasty habit of 'embracing the grid' rather than breaking it.  :(
