Single Player And Multiplayer Begin To Merge

Games traditionally feature both single player and multiplayer as separate entities. With the rise to prominence of PSN and Xbox Live, the two modes have been competing with each other.  Underwhelming multiplayer in strong single player experiences and lacking single player gameplay in exciting multiplayer focused games were all too common in recent years.

At last year's E3, there was a clear tide shift in the game industry as the two modes began to harmonize. Destiny, The Division and Watch Dogs offered glimpses into games that acted like MMOs with players in huge connected worlds and raids, but all with the polish and mechanics of a top-tier AAA action game.

While The Division may not end up hitting until 2015, expect to see more and more games that are both announced and released featuring this melding of single player and multiplayer. It's another way to effectively make games "always-online." Do you think that this is the future of games development?

MMOs offer a large universe of competitors at different levels.  Individual player games like SC4 offer private expression.  Missing in all this are the direct, one-on-one games like chess, go, and similar strategy games between two players.  Generally people who want to play this way find a quiet corner and a game board and play face to face.  I am very much in favour of a shady spot in a park with a chess board, thermos of coffee, chess clocks and an friendly opponent.

I hate this move. Its all fun when you got a bunch of friends with the same consoles to play with, but my friends don't have the same consoles like me (or spend the same amount of time on gaming as me). So basically that leaves me to play with complete strangers and in games like the Division or Destiny, that is going to completely ruin the narrative experience for me.

Furthermore, games are a way for me to get away from everything and everyone. Sure, I like to play the occasional round of CoD, Battlefield, Halo or Mass Effect. But for me the focus lies on playing the singleplayer. This whole idea that games need to be social experiences that you have with other people is just annoying as hell.

I beg to differ.

Destiny is built around the MMO concept, with an option to play by yourself.

Watchdogs is single player game at heart with hit and miss multiplayer online mode, though the game lacks polish.

The Division is still up in the air.

Don't take E3 too seriously, since it really has turned into an EA, Activision (Call of Duty announcement), Ubisoft, Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo conference now.

The rest of the companies have been skipping E3 due to the costs of keeping up with everyone else (yes E3 conferences costs upwards of $30 million now)

This cost is the reason why Nintendo did a different format and why Activision only shows reels of Call of Duty trailers at their booth.

Gamescon (EU) and TGS now match E3 in attendance and announcements.

The point being E3 is shrinking in size every year.

With that said there were quite a few single player games and multiplayer games specific games as well.

The single player games I'm looking fowarded to by year's end are:

  • Captain Toad's game
  • Hyrulian Warriors
  • Bayonetta 2 (comes with Bayonetta 1 for free)
  • Pokemon Omega Ruby
  • Art Academy (full version)
  • Pier Solar (if it finally comes out. RPG)
  • Kirby Triple deluxe (3DS)
  • [insert unannounced games]

Multi:

  • Both Smash Bros (no they aren't the same game)

Next Year:

  • Yoshi's Wolly World (single)
  • Mario Maker (single)
  • Xenobalde Chronicles X (single)
  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (Single)
  • Devil's third (single/multi)
  • Zelda U (unless it gets delayed)
  • Splatoon (multi)
  • [insert unannounced games]

Yeah my Wii U and 3DS are going to kill my wallet through the next year :(

Strangely there is nothing that appeals to me at the current moment on the other systems (I can get the games I want on Steam).

I can certainly see that there has been some effort to bring some multiplayer functionality to games which have traditionally been single player. This is not inherently a bad thing, it can broaden a game's horizons and enhance the experiences available.

What I don't like is when multiplayer becomes an essentially required part of a game that people expect to be a single player game. Adding it as an extra is nice, but redefining the core of the gameplay is needlessly disruptive.

Super Smash Bros is, quite honestly, perhaps the best example of a series that harmonizes single player and multiplayer quite well. The games are designed as multiplayer games, no doubt, but they are designed in a way such that they can be played alone and still be highly enjoyed. In both Melee and Brawl, it is possible to unlock all characters either entirely through multiplayer mode or entirely through single player mode. I think that's awesome.

Since I have no friends, all my gaming is single player.  Sure, my brother and his friends have asked me to be player 4 in the past, but other than that, it was Club Penguin in 4th grade and my cousin in Fire Emblem.  I don't want to have to be forced to play with other people.  I like playing alone, so I don't want other people in on it.  If I had friends and we wanted to socialize, we wouldn't do it via gaming.

I do play some city building games on my phone, so I friended desperate people online who needed friends.  But then again, they don't have to talk to me and I don't have to talk to them.

While I do enjoy multiplayer games and tend to pour more time into that then single player, There is always been the good feeling of full control in a single player game where there is more immersion in the story since you are the focus, I would not like to see them merged.

Both have their own place and that shouldn't be messed with.

However with that being said, in the divisions and rainbow six seiges case it is a little different, I love the idea of interacting with other real players in order to accomplish different tasks, it brings tactical strategy to a whole new level.

Of course this is in concept only, when executed you have a bunch of anti-social people (Think GTA series) That go around and cause problems for other people.

I don't mind a merger as long as it is not essential to play/finish the game.

Watch Dogs does a pretty good implementation of this, no hassle playing single-player alone still you can always expect you're not alone on the map. totally adds to the atmosphere of the game.

but I don't like to have the multiplayer experience an essential part to play the singleplayer game...

or even worse, you pay 50 60 70 bucks for a game that hooks you up with a cool single-player teasing and then turns out to have it's main focus on the multiplayer experience... *cough* GTA5 *couch*

The thing that I don't like about this is that it is all about money. They just want to milk console gamers for all they are worth. Multiplayer and co-op experiences are great, but does every game need to have them? No. Some game companies hate the idea of gamers being able to enjoy hundreds of hours of gameplay without having to pay more than the original cost of the game. I'm looking at you Ubisoft and EA.

rather look at MS here and their xbox online policy. no need to blame the game producers for using utilities offered.

I mean, on PS and PC, you don't have to pay for an online membership to play the games, unless you jump on the edge-giving purchases or micro-transactions.

If you wanna blame the producers/publishers for cash-cowing gamers, join the DLC-spitstorm. cutting stuff from the game or intentionally not producing it to make money from DLC and micro-DLC is even far more a problem imho
