Contradiction?

HI, i am not very internet savvy, and am not big on making web relationships so my etiquette may not be correct, but i was confused by something. Earlier i added to a post(unsuccessfully), and a moderater got mad because i added to an old post, but i only did that because  i thought that it was bad to start a new post involving matter already inside a forum in simtropolis. Why even keep it up? I thought that is what the point of forums? Also a little weird someone would be invested enough to make a comment, and close the forum...i thought this was a game.....you know, for fun. I honestly do not know what is proper in the www. I just learned what a troll was a couple of months ago.  I would like to post a picture of my city, but do not know how. Is there instructions on how to do that somewhere on here? Should i just start new forums, and just ignore the old?  And yes, these are real questions. I dont really do social media, this is the most online contact ive ever made, and i just want to stay away from grumps, crabs, sticklers, and other general no fun folk. The internet is not filled with fun happy people ive found.

Well, let's break this down by pieces first.

1. It's a generally accepted rule across nearly all forum sites, even here, that replying to old forum posts is not a good idea; this is usually called "thread necromancy" or "bumping". One of the reasons is that the participants of that discussion are either gone or the information of that discussion is outdated. There are a few exceptions, such as certain mod/tech support/development threads, where they're continuously open for discussion, no matter how much time has passed, or if there's important information to add to the discussion.

2. It's not a good idea to think that you think you could just get a moderator "mad". If something happens that requires moderator action, there's always a reason as to why, and not because they're mad. (Believe me, no one wants to be mad at someone else.) If you're unsure as to why or if there's a misunderstanding, you can always contact the staff via private message to clear things up.

3. On the topic of posting pictures to ST, it's best to do so by uploading the picture onto a third-party image hosting site (imgur.com and photobucket.com are notable examples), and taking the direct link and putting it in this code:

[img=<INSERT DIRECT LINK FOR IMAGE HERE>]

There are more detailed instructions in various places across the forums, and even across the web.

4. Typically, for the case of posting images to share, the "Show Us" threads (in city-building concepts) is the place to go. https://community.simtropolis.com/forum/4-sc4-city-building-concepts/ If a thread for what you're looking for doesn't already exist, feel free to make a new one. If you're unsure, you can also ask via PM.

4.5. As a general note to go along with that, it's also a good idea to make sure you post something in the right place; it's not uncommon that it happens, but makes things cluttered and confusing if it does.

5. As mentioned before, no one wants to be mad at someone else, and going beyond that, no one here should make someone else mad. This site has been around for about 10 years, and there's no way it'd still exist in its current state if everyone was out to pick on someone else. (If something like that does happen, you can report the offence using the report system.)

6. If you want some guidelines on proper ST etiquette, you can review the forum rules; this is what is expected out of everyone. https://community.simtropolis.com/index.php?app=forums&module=extras&section=boardrules If you're still unsure or have any other questions, you can always contact one of the staff. By the way, this is the list of the staff: https://community.simtropolis.com/index.php?app=forums&module=extras&section=stats&do=leaders

Hope that helps.

Reviving an old post is sometimes called necromancing or necro'ing for short. Raising the dead and all that. Like in all aspects of life, there are those who care and those who don't. The reason for frowning upon post necro'ing is that it is very unlikely that the OP (original poster) will ever be around to read your necro'd post. It's akin to someone asking you a question and you answering them a year later and 1000 miles away. The old threads are kept so that others may read and learn from them. Usually (but not always) old posts are solved and replying to them is moot.

It's true, forum manners dictate looking up your answer first, if possible, before posting a new question. However, it has been my observation that those friendly folks who stand by 10 year old games to answers newbie (new players) questions don't mind repeating answers. When I used to be into Fallout 3, I had a list of 'common answers' that I cut and pasted to the most frequently asked questions - and never did I throttle someone for asking. What is that saying, the only stupid question is the one never asked.

As for posting a picture, you'll need to get familiar with a few steps...

1) Hold Shift and press the print screen key above your numeric key pad to save a .bmp image of your computer screen to the buffer.

2) Open Microsoft Paint (or the like) and press Ctrl - V to paste the image.

3) Mark it up anyway you'd like - add arrows, circles, text, etc... then save it as a .jpeg (it's much smaller than a bitmap .bmp)

4) Go to Photobucket or the like and create an account, if you haven't already.

5) Once you have your account setup, use the Photobucket upload button to upload your jpegs to their server.

6) Click on the thumbnail of one of your uploaded images to see it full screen and then click on the 'Direct' URL listed under 'Links to Share This Photo' in the upper right of the page. That will copy the image URL to your buffer.

7) In a comment on these forums, click the 'image' icon. It's the 11th from the left on the second row of icons, kind of underneath the yellow smiley face.  It looks like a little picture in a tiny blue frame. If you hover your mouse over it, the word 'Image' will pop up after a second.

8) Use Ctrl-V to paste the contents of the buffer into the URL field that pops up.

9) Click OK and viola, you have uploaded an image to this site.

It's a lot of steps, but gets pretty easy after you've done it a few times.

Oh, and here's a new term for ya. When you work on a post for 15 minutes and someone beats you to the punch by posting a few seconds before you, rendering your post utterly redundant, that's called being ninja'd!

Does that mean you stutter IRL?

One other thing that bothers me personally about some posts is the omission of the use of white space to separate ideas or topics.

Using a blank line to separate things makes for better reading.

There is a MAC forum for SC4 related questions.

Well, at some degree, he is probably right. If you are new, and I mean new to the internet.. There are some stuff that you might not know, and it's difficult at first to understand. I say this because my mom basically discovered the internet like 2 years ago.. I can remember her posting stuff in blogs that were dead for probably 2 years.. And she expected an answer :P

All I'm saying is, if you are used to something you can't see the difficulties for other people who are very new to that something.

Maybe if a thread is inactive for more than 365 days, the moderators should just lock it. So you can still see the info, see the posters, but are not allowed to post.

I still visit some old threads, like cjs and stuff like that, and of course I don't post.. But that's because I've been a member since 2006... So, maybe locking threads would help more to the newcomers... Just a thought... :)

Auto-locking a thread after it has been idle for a long period might not be a bad idea.  Staff could unlock any that they felt could be continued.

This is a very good point.  I know that the "wall of text" is a sure way to get me to skip over reading something.  My eyes aren't what they used to be, and big blocks of text tend to blur together.

Just something to keep in mind guys.
