Distances between home to work

The city I'm building is much more in reality where I put all the residential homes in one area and they drive through the neighborhood of the streets, and putting the commercial offices/services along the avenues. The Sims house is about 7 tiles away from their job and their commute trip on the query tool says it's medium, other than short, and if the house is about 10 tiles away, it says it long.  Sometimes I see a house where a for sale sign is up because the family moved out because the commute was too long.  Do I need to put the job very close to them about 3 tiles to have a short commute?  Also on the line graph of the commute time in the Mayors panel, it shows that it's about 20 minutes also, which is hard to believe because they just work down the street.

Sounds as if you are not using the NAM. I think maximum walking distance is something like 5 or 6 tiles, so 7 tiles for medium sounds about right. Without NAM, it's really important to have living space and workplace in close proximity and/or some means of fast travel in direct line from the house to the workplace (the Sims won't use anything that's a few tiles away parallel to a shorter street). In general, you seem to have the right idea. Without NAM, a "pod" approach works best, with mixed blocks of residential/commercial and alternate services, like police/fire and school/medical in adjacent small "pods" with a central transport hub every few tiles.

Ignore average commute time information, it's just some stupid number.

This is true (especially the "Ignore" part), although in small towns, with the Maxis traffic simulator (which you are apparently using), you can get a fairly accurate number by dividing the displayed number by 25 (since Maxis multiplied the number by 25 to get the display).  So in your case, the commute time is actually 48 seconds, which sounds correct, considering that Sims don't stop at intersections, or anywhere else for that matter.

If you want to get rid of the "Abandoned due to commute time" that happens with the Maxis traffic simulator and gets progressively worse as your city increases in size, you need to install the NAM traffic simulator, which is part of the NAM download.

In reality where I use to work, my job was about nine houses down the street and that's a very short commute, just for pedestrian walking..., which would be about nine houses/tiles on SimCity 4, and on there the Sims drive to work, and says the commute is long for them.

Well, yes. You won't hear many good things about the default traffic simulator of this game here. That's the reason why the NAM exists, after all.

Haha, I live 200m from work and yes, I too drive there!
