I like it! it looks almost like the Autoroute Decarie in Montreal!

I say in terms of continuing this mod, go for it! It's a cool idea.

That's REALLY cool, but it wouldn't extremely useful. Why? Because on/off ramps require a tile between the highway and the road, so you'd have to kind of bend the road, and it doesn't look too good. But eh, who cares. Keep working on this anyway, I'd probably use it.3.gif

Guys, those are the Maxis-made retaining walls, he didn't desing them. What he has done is lower (I think) the level at which the retaining wall is placed (usually its only on large cliffs) and so whenever it is placed on a slope it usually wouldn't be able tobe placed on it creates those walls. I think this is a brilliant idea smoncrie, the possibilities for a mod like this are amazing. I think you should continue this because it has alot of possibilites. I was wondering, exactly what is its uses, does it only create a retaining wall when its on the side of a slope (like shown) or as a slope from a cliff? Great work, this mod has alot of potential. 44.gif

I think this is really great!! It would be nice to be able to run two roads next to each other at different levels. I've wanted to be able to do something like this for quite some time!

Please DO continue development on this!!

I was tinkering with the transit network retaining walls and I was able to do this:

This is the result of a mod; no lots or puzzle pieces were used.

Is anyone interested? Should I do any more work on it?

Is it possible for you to change the design of the maxis retaining walls or would that be impossible?

That looks good. The only thing is that you would need overpasses & onramps... look in the RHW thread for that, you could get some neat ideas. 5.gif

The texture on the side of the walls would definetly have to change, maybe a cement or steel style?

Great that someone is taking the time to do this. Indeed, I considered a similar style of project...a tool that tunneled or bridged at any slope. Unfortunately to do so would be to remove functionality from an existing tool (or accept the limitations of the ANT; one of which is no tunnels 34.gif). So in the end I abandoned it.

But I think this is a good idea, and oneway is the most appropriate network for it. This makes me ponder interactions between retaining walls and interchanges...I don't think I've ever had a situation where they were adjacent. Maybe the game forbids it.
Who knows? 42.gif

*sigh* If only there were a way to turn it on and off, like with the shift key or something. Unless you do have a way up your sleeve? (Though if you do, we might as well give you all the trixies! 3.gif)

While your picture shows the road abutting a highway (and that's all most people seem to be focusing on!) I think it's important to keep in mind that this would be useful for more than just running road next to highway.

I only say this so that the project doesn't get scrapped simply because everybody is trying to figure out how to make onramps work with this ... which they won't ... but that doesn't make it any less useful!

Nofunk,

This would also allow for retaining walls along cliffs, like the road tool does. I have thought about doing the same thing that Smoncrie is doing for some time. Now I see he beat me to it (particularly since he knows what he is doing with this mod).

I did some more checking into the retaining walls, and I was disappointed.  They are unpredictable and inconsistent.   In particular, doing the same thing in different directions gives different results.

I will attach the mod as it exists so far. Use at your own risk.

To build a sunken highway with retaining walls, drag 6 parallel roads along the path of the highway.  Bulldoze the center 4 roads, and dig the ditch for the sunken highway between the remaining two roads.  Drag streets along the sloping sides of the ditch.  If desired, drag a road or a one-way road over the street.  Finish by dragging a ground highway along the bottom of the ditch and by bulldozing the remaining two of the 6 parallel roads.   Note that if you drag a road along the bottom of the ditch, it only works on one side.

This is a simple mod that consists of two parts:

First, I modified the MaxTerrainHtIncrease parameter in the Street Placement Tuning Parameters exemplar.  (Note this makes it incompatible with slope mods.)  I used the street exemplar in the attached mod, because roads and one-way roads can be dragged over streets without changing the height of the retaining walls.
