Renaming buildings

I am using the 'Extra Cheats' mod to allow me to plop any building but it is hard to find the custom buildings I have downloaded in the massive list.

 

My solution is to rename them but I don't know which files to rename to have the desire effect.

 

Do I rename SC4MODEL files, SC4LOT files or SC4DESC files?

Apart from determining loading order, the physical filename (i.e. what can be seen in your plugins folder) isn't read by the game. What needs to be changed is a property enclosed within the SC4LOT file. This can be accomplished with a small bit of editing using the

 

Note: Before continuing, I suggest making a copy of the file, just in case.

 

1. Open the desired SC4LOT file with the Reader.
2. At the top you'll see list of entries. Click to open the Exemplar File*.
3. A list of properties will be listed on the right pane. Right click the one named Exemplar Name, and select "Edit property".
4. Change the name to something else.
5. Hit "Apply".
6. Save the file to complete.
7. Exit.

 

* Sometimes there may be more than one visible Exemplar File. The correct one to open should have properties like bulldoze cost, occupant size, power consumed, etc...
