Minimizing clogging at the reigion connection.

We probably need a thread for this (if we don't have one already).  Especially now that the game has toned down traffic to the point where there is some manageability.

What I find helps traffic at the reigion connection:

  • Use maps with two connections - this limits your maps, but it's helpful.  Don't build anything on the crossthrough road to ensure clear traffic flow, and keep in mind that you CAN bulldoze the existing road and redraw it.
  • Mass transit.  Train station, Regional Bus station, ferry.  This alllows people to get to your city from other connected cities without driving.
  • Trade depot - gets the freight into the city without using the connection.

None of these are "magic bullets" yet, though - but there is noticeable effect.

The trick that I have seen the most effective is the roundabout.

- Extend the inbound road across the map.

- Cross it somewhere around the center of the map.

- Bulldoze 2-3 sections off each direction from the intersection.

- Use the circle tool to make a roundabout connecting all 4 points.

- Use bridges to cross the incomming branch (or bulldoze most of it and turn it into a tunnel)

- Don't cross any of the other branches before at least 1 set of avenue sized grid guides.

- Ron't run street cars between the roundabout and the first intersection for each branch.

- Upgrade the Circle & Incomming Branch to High Density.

- Downgrade Other branches from circle to first intersection to Medium Density. (This ensures roundabout stop lights have priority unless you find you really need all 6 lanes)

Coupled with a Regional Bus Station to reduce the raw number of cars comming in the setup seems to be handling pretty much any traffic my cities can throw at it. It annoys me how much space it ends up using since you can't zone on any of it but it does work.

A trick for Trade Trucks if your playing on a plot with Oil.

- Unlock Oil Rig

- Place Oil Rig Anywhere

- Branch the oil service road from the main entrence (You can do this right at the map edge) and drag it to wherever you want intersecting as many roads as you want.

- Make sure it connects to the oil rig's default roads (otherwise it doesn't work right)

- Close/Power Down Oil Rig if you don't plan to pump anything (Do not bulldoze)

From then on any Non-Freight Service Truck (Regional Trade Export/Import or Local Delivery from Trade Depot/Port) will use these service roads as an immediate bypass if traffic backs up anywhere. Regional trucks will generally exit onto the service road the moment they enter your city while local deliveries can make short cuts around town as needed :)

There is a mod you can download here to make the service road from the oil wells available all the time and on every map.

I make my city grids a 2x2 regular road size (the size of one megatower) and the first 2 grids next to the enterences I make overpasses so that they don't connect to the avenue.

Yesterday I was making a tourism city and although everyone that was playing had megatowers(so I know they had the expansion) they weren't using drones and I was getting 5,000 incomming shoppers + over 5,000 tourists(not all driving) + at least 2,000 workers. If they had drones I wouldn't have any traffic problems, but I did have busses for the turists and placed a ton of park and drive bus stops next to the enterance. People actually used them, each one said 600 users per day and that helped.

I recently found a link to this https://imgur.com/a/JCjhC on reddit, its called The Flux Capacitor, Have found any design similar to this works at reducing clogging at the region entry and exit.

Does that work if you're not using the future expansion pack?

I find that eliminating intersections along the entry road works well. Most of my large cities have elevated "expressways" that bypass the main streets of the city to connect economic areas to the city exit. Traffic on these flows so freely that I've never seen them fully congested before.

Well the community member Sky recently released a mod that allows you to create your own interstate connections so you are no longer restricted to the default connectors. I havent used it yet but it looks promising. The only thing I wish it had are the individual ramps that allow you to create t's and intersections without lights, but its still good none the less.
