In my opinion, it's probably one of the best strategy games of all time.

Well, the game is like any other strategy game pretty much. Just look it up on Wikipedia or something.

Well, actually, Civilization 4 is probably the best, now that I think about it.

Could you elaborate? I don't even know what is that game about...

The Settlers is a long running series of slow paced medieval Real-Time Strategy games that mostly focus on city building and resource collection. The Settlers 3 was released in 1998 but is available at Good Old Games (along with a few other in the series), has aged very well in my opinion, and is still good fun :)

The latest release in the series is The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom released in 2010 and is probably the best way to introduce yourself to the series since it has modern graphics and is still fun to play.

Here's a screenshot of each Faction in Settlers 3:

ihmo, s2 was the best and it turned crappy the moment the series went down realistic-graphics-blvd (I think s5). luckily they got back to the "oldschool" cute-ish design and even did a proper 3D relaunch of settlers 2.

I can't remember a game that when from 2d to 3d relaunch-wise that nailed the original feeling that precisely.

oh, If you happen to own an original copy of the settlers 2, I can strongly suggest to try out RTTR (return to the roots)
it turns s2 into a non-dos playable game with all the perks of todays standards, but still keeping the original gameplay and even enhances it beyond what the expansion packs (that's oldschool for "dlc") gave us...

For anyone interested, all of The Settlers games over at Good Old Games are 60% off ($4 each) at the moment. The good thing about Good Old Games is that they guarantee compatibility for old games on newer operating systems.

Oh man The settlers! You gave me nostalgic goosebumps right now! I had downloaded the VI and VII a few days ago but with Banished finally here I didn't get around to playing them.

I remember playing The settlers 3 and being totally engrossed in the game, mostly because I was very young, new to PCs and had just so much fun figuring things out on my own. No better feeling!
