There are places where this would be normal and no one would care. People ride in the back of pickups all the time. And then how come it's OK for the dog to ride back there but not the child? The pet's safety isn't important?

 

But yeah, having a kid in a moving car anywhere where she is not wearing a seatbelt is poor practice. A light legal nudge but no serious trouble is probably appropriate.

I rode in the back of a pick up truck all the time as a kid as did many of my friends. That is not a problem but allowing the girl to be inside the cage is. What if, god forbid (just using the reference not starting a god debate ) the truck crashed, caught on fire and her parents were knocked out and she couldn't get out of the cage or it was a bad enough accident that the cage flew out anyway. She could have been seriously hurt.

That being said, going to parenting classes seems dumb to me. Unless there is ANY other sign of bad parenting let this one go!

I dunno, I think it also depends on where they were going, what roads they would take and how long it would take them. I mean a 15 minute drive to a store over mostly rural roads? I would give the parents a warning and leave it at that. But if they would take a highway for an hour long trip? Yeah, that would be more problematic. 

 

Still, I think they did the right thing. Parenting classes should be sufficient.

Slap on the wrist is definitely advisable, but nothing more.  Several highway traffic act violations are involved, so a stiff fine would also have helped. 

 

One question before sentencing:  Was the cage tied down?  If not, then animal cruelty charges could be considered.

Well riding in the back of a pick-up is nowt. When you're on a farm or private property nobody uses seatbelts and all that nonsense. If you don't crash you don't need em, and prevention is worth more than cure after all.

 

Having said that it was pretty stupid because it's a turnpike. Also who rides in a cage with a dog... It seems pointless and silly. But if she told her parents to then I guess it's not entirely their problem.
