96: Our specific word that we used during the war was Woolloomooloo (it's an inner neighbourhood of Sydney). The Japanese would say something like wurumuru and we'll, you can understand what happened next.

Jean Michel Jarre - Wooloomooloo

"If you try to please everybody, you often times end up pleasing nobody, especially yourself. When somebody offers to do a favor for free, like making a mod for SimCity 4, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." - Twilight Sparkle after playing SimCity

"Being a mayor or a content creator for SimCity 4 is a heavy responsibility, Patrick. Each city and each custom content is like a child, and must be treated as such." - SpongeBob Squarepants after playing SimCity

Yeah, there's really nothing strange about Fernsehen, especially as it's pretty much only the literal translation of television (except that vision is actually the noun 'Sicht' and not the verb 'sehen').

To me, all European languages look and sound strange except English + some Romance languages (e.g. French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese).

German? Too many agglutinations. like the word Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz (63 letters!!!).

I thought that Hungarian and Finnish are even worse. However, after some research, I found the following trivia:

Longest Hungarian word: legeslegtöredezettségmentesíthetetlenebbeskedéseitekért (55 letters)

Longest Finnish word: lentokonesuihkuturbiinimoottoriapumekaanikkoaliupseerioppilas (61 words)

So, German still wins! Yay!

In contrast, Chinese is one of the most succinct languages in the world. Even the Japanese are reluctant to abandon kanji (Chinese characters) because it saves so much space.

Korean also looks and sounds really foreign to most Chinese. Luckily those pronunciations of Chinese-derived vocabulary are easier to remember compared to native Korean words. But it has even more keigo than Japanese (the thing I hated most about the language while I was learning it).

88: Yeah, but those words are seldomly used and you can figure out the meaning instantly by its constituent parts.

Yea, but the Chinese characters are renowned for being brutally hard to learn. I do like how Korean works.

I can tell Chinese, Korean, and Japanese text apart.

May not sound impressive but most Americans cannot, so I'm special. :P

That said, other than that I know very little about Chinese or Korean and only a smidge about Japanese. And I don't have command of any language other than English, though I know some Italian, and dealing with Quebec has forced me to pick up some choice French phrases (stuff like that "voie gauche bareé" means "left lane closed" :D)

Yea, but the Chinese characters are renowned for being brutally hard to learn.

They are not. The characters are hard to learn for adults, but for children it is very easy to memorize the appearance of a word by associating it with a particular object. Chinese grammar is the simplest of all. No tenses, no honorifics, no gender.

I do like how Korean works.

Although many ang mohs say that Korean alphabet is very "logical" compared to Chinese (which does not use a phonetic alphabet in the first place), the keigo is the most troublesome part.

In Korea and Japan, you must remember that under no circumstances should one, heaven forbid, forget to employ keigo even when chatting with superiors and strangers. Foreigners tend to underestimate how seriously the Koreans and Japanese take keigo.

There have been cases where people got killed for using a slightly disrespectful word towards a "superior" (e.g. a high school senior) while drunk.

It's pretty common in Germanic and Nordic language to link words into one word. Dutch is also a good example of that. The word "computermuis" is a combination of "computer" and "muis" (mouse). With this word linkage you quickly see relations between words, in this case, it's not an animal, but the mouse for your computer.

If you see someone linking up words like that in English, chances are he's actually germanic or nordic...

MandelSoft is right. By combination of nouns, it is theoretically possible to create very long words with even more than 63 letters.

For example, Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänskajütenschlüsselanhängerfabrikvorsteher has 81 letters and is grammatically correct (or so I hope, as I just made it up. It follows a popular example for long words, though, so I only made up half of it).

Does anyone want to try to translate it? (It is more or less nonsensical, but as I said, should be grammatically correct, so you can't say that it doesn't exist.)

    Let me try:
Donau-steamship sailing community captain's cabin key chain factory director.

OK, try the following dutch one:
    Vrachtwagenachteraanhangerrechterachterbandventieldopje-aankoopverzekeringsbewijsinleveringsbaliemedewerksteruniformopslagplaatscontroleursnaamplaatjefabrieksdirecteursstoel

Yes, it's possible to make those ridiculously long words...

Did anyone notice that Duke posted on number 87?

I'm not sure whether you would call it a sailing community or rather a (sailing/shipping) company, but everything else is absolutely correct.

So, for the Dutch one now:

Freight truck hind trailer right rear tire valve cap - sales assurance card delivery desk employee uniform storehouse controller's name tag factory director's chair

I have to admit that I had to use Google for the part from band to werkster and for opslagplaats, because I didn't understand their meaning.

For those interested, that word has over 170 letters.

Bieber is dumb. And most people would probably agree with you about the Backstreet Boys but they were cool when I was in middle school and you know what? No shame, I still like them. :D

As for the Beatles, I'm not crazy into them as those sort of oldies aren't really the sort of music I like to listen to regularly, but I do have a lot of respect for them. They were very talented and they were one of the best bands of their time.

71: Whilst I am not a big fan of their music, you have to admit they were pioneers in the development of modern day music, branching out into different forms of rock rather than the 16 bar progression that was common in the day (think Surfin USA).

One thing is for sure, they are no Linkin Park, now that is what rock is supposed to sound like.

If they were around back them, only beatles people would know were the ones you swat with a newspaper.
