My Simcity 4 Let's Play

Hello, builders and planners of mighty cities!

After watching a few videos about the latest Simcity I wanted to play a game where I could build and manage cities, but for some reasons (one being that I'm on a tight budget this month and that 60 euros was too much for me) I wasn't too hot for the latest Simcity (though it did seem like a nice game in its own right), so I decided to go for Simcity 4 as I was told it's an amazing game.

This is my first time playing a Simcity game, as I was never a Sims and/or Simcity person, so I learn as I play (though I did check a short and simple tutorial).

As I was playing the in-game tutorials, I thought that it might get a bit repetitive so I decided to break the pace by making videos out of this. Tho you'll only want to check those if you are quite bored I reckon, as watching someone build cities may not be the most exiting thing on earth ;)

Just remember I'm a total newbie, so if one of you veterans has some suggestions (or complaints!) let me know in the comments! I'll also be checking this thread though.

Have a good day!

edit: I realised I shoud write this after Bdub post, but please be aware that there may be some swearing in those vids, I dont remember saying anything huge though, so it should mostly be cute and harmless as far as swearing goes.

Hi Deneroth,  I didn't watch the whole thing but I watched enough to be reminded how fun the game is to discover when it's new.  Thanks for the memories!

I notice your game is letterboxed in the video, you can make this game run in widescreen by using Logic_Bomb  - or - 2 custom shortcut commands: -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 (plug in your own resolution).

    Hi docj!

First thanks a lot for sparing some of your time watching (even part of) the video and commenting here, and your welcome, I'm glad you liked it.

As for the video thingy, this is something I realised after having finished my second video (which I'll be posting on the morrow) and is due to me using my left monitor (letterboxed) to play games, I'll be sure to play on my right screen when recoring this from now on to get rid of those annoying black strips!

I noticed that all your tiles are the same size (region view) and are of the smallest size.  I like to vary my tile sizes so some tiles will be very large, others medium, and the rest small.  That creates even more variety and sets the stage for different growth patterns per tile.  My biggest tiles are for epic cities while smaller tiles can be rural towns, farms, suburban neighborhoods, resort areas, or even slums.

SimCity4 seems much better than SimCity5 by the way.  You can't terraform in SimCity5 so no rivers and waters that you can create or mountains.

Ha! I loved it! Your accent is so cool! Watching you play reminded me of how I started... Not a clue as to what I was doing. It's going to be great to watch as you learn how to play better and make better cities. I'm also willing to bet, you will get lots of suggestions and ideas from others.

I am wondering, did you download any custom content or are you playing just the "vanilla" version?

I admit I don't want to give any advice, cause what works for me may not work for you. If I tell you how to do things then you will just be making a city that I can make myself if you can follow me. Besides it will be fun watching you learn to do things on your own. That being said, don't forget to water your sims as your city grows. They do get thirsty if you want higher wealth sims. Okay enough of that.

One final thing, I personally could care less about the cussing, however since this is a "pg" site, a moderator or two might frown upon the cussing. Just throwing that out there to ya.

So don't stop making this. I want to see more. Good job!!!

@azxcv: I'm sorry, how can I change the tile size? I was never told how to do so :D

@Bdub01: thanks for the support! I'm currently just using NAM, as for suggestions feel free to give some if you want to, I'll just ignore anything I don't feel like doing anyway, though if you say you prefere watching me learn on my own don't suggest anything then I guess ^^ .

Also I've watered my city between ep 2 and 3, as I thought that doing every little thing in those video would get extra boring.

As for the cussing... well I can't really help it, I think it comes with playing games while speaking english! I hope mods will forgive me, I'll add some sort of disclaimer in first post if I can to warn people.

Here is part 2 which I just unleashed:

edit: also when I start those vids they start in the middle of it for some reason, anyone beside me experiencing this? If so please tell me so I can try and change it.

Lmao!!! Just watched the second video. It's so funny cause you play just like I did starting out. A couple of things that can help you out.., you can adjust how many patients and students you hospital and school have by clicking on them and lowering the funding to save simoleans. Also you don't have to add something because the advisors say so. Such as the large school, you don't need it early on. It's a gift for reaching a certain population. Also you don't have to put a fire department down till your first fire. Finally read a thread about the RCI indicator. That will help you with zoning. Can't wait for the next one...
