Managing traffic is so frustrating

One of my cities had a big problem with to much traffic at the freeway exit and an extremly long traffic jam at the freeway.

First, I tried to solve that problem by offering a railway connection for the people commuting in. Several thousands of people use it, but it still didn´t solve the problem. So I made a bus terminal. But busses from other cities just got stuck in the traffic jam at the freeway.

I realized that just a fraction of the traffic jam is caused by cars that comming from the freeway. It is caused by people driving from their homes to their jobs or the university on the other side of the street. Instead of using a left turn on a crossroad, they turn right and drive to the freeway access and trying to make a u-turn, blocking the incomming traffic and jamming the freeway exit. :noway:

I tried to stop them from pulling this stunt, by deleting intersections near the freeway exit. It worked and solved the problem, and the going out of money problem of the people that stucked all day in traffic, because they tried to make a u-turn on the freeway access.

So, if you have problems with traffic, maybe it is caused by this kind of sunday driver action of your city population.

Yep, it's a city simulation. People do all kinds of crazy things in real life too.  You must watch what they actually do and then change your design to fix any issues.  Same in real life.

The invention of beer and the wheel were the foundation of modern civilization & together were the catalyst that split humanity into two distinct subgroups: liberals & conservatives. Some men spent their days tracking & killing animals to B-B-Q at night while they were drinking beer. These men were called "conservatives". Other men who were weaker & less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly B-B-Q's & doing the sewing, fetching & hair dressing. They were called "progressives".

I managed to keep traffic density pretty low in the beginning by leveling off at high density streets for residential zones, but then I got restless and started laying down avenues which began my traffic woes.

Initially avenues were put down sparingly, with intersecting high dense roads from residential areas, but I lost control and started putting down avenues that intersected each other and so forth...

I try my best to lay down one major avenue through the city. I dont zone anything on this avenue, especially not commercial. I do not connect any high density roads to it either. This prevents stoplights and lets the traffic flow at top speed all the way to the desired road. They then turn off and deal with side street traffic that very rarely gets bogged down.

So far this has made for the best city, as all my emergency vehicles can zip around freely and take care of business.

@Zpike, in real life, if you are trying to make a u-turn on the highway. You are going to die in a horrible car crash, or at least loose your driving license and maybe even go to jail. Maybe 1 guy would do that in reallife, but not thousands every day.

In real life, traffic lights adjust their red periods to the amount of cars that are waiting in each lane, there are more street signs not just STOP, buses have schedules, people don´t go to the first free job in the morning and to the first free house in the evening,...

Sim City 2013 is not realistic and no simulation. But it can still be fun.

We need an better screenshot with the traffic.

But regarding avenues. Rules of thumb :

No junctions at least 4-5 large buildings "length"  from the map entrance.

    Never build on them anything.

Only medium or low roads connected to them. Never a high street.

And only L junctions on them. Never X or T.

    @Panos

Thx for the help. But I solved the problem, I just posted in the first place,  to let people know that the Agents in this game are making u-turns on the highway, what can cause a massive traffic jam in the region highway.
