Props are the smaller objects that are not buildings, things like lampposts, parked cars, trees (that are not planted wuth the flora tool), people, signs, fences, etc. They enrich the look of the lots.

And props are reusable by many lot makers.  They don't appear without a supporting lot.  In a computer programming sense they are a library.

If a lot creator assigns custom props to a lot (using the Lot Editor), then they will become a dependency. Usually, props are found in mega packs, each containing multiple different types. Without the prop pack installed, the assigned props won't be shown on the lot. For reference, a list of commonly used packs can be found in my signature.

For the standard Maxis buildings to appear on custom lots, you'll need two small files: Bldgprop_vol1 and Bldgprop_vol2. Most lot creators assume that these are installed, so they can be overlooked.

The custom content scene can be tricky to understand, so don't worry. Since we're a learning community, it's good to ask questions if you're ever unsure of something. :)
