Washington D.C. (on the banks of the Potomac River) in between Virginia and Marylandin, of course, the United States of America, North America, yada yada yada.  We're looking down the national mall (the capitol is behind the picture taker.

In the background of the picture is the Washington Monument, and it appears the picture was taken in the 70's (is that extra credit?)

EDIT:  Ok, I really DID guess 70's... from the tag on the picture, it says it was taken in January of '72 and that it's the worlds' widest avenue.

EDIT #2:  Voar Tok, I really enjoy this game... but IMO, it's been really easy for one fairly obvious reason... the pictures tend to have the name of where they are or what the picture is, in the tag!  Now, some might consider it cheating to look... but others might think of it as merely checking to see if I've got the right answer and there's a pretty fuzzy line between what people ACTUALLY are doing!

So, maybe if you saved the picture on your computer and changed then name, THEN uploaded it...  9.gif  Just a suggestion!!

As for your guess, well, you're on the wrong continent.  And no bonus points for when the picture was taken, because I don't know when a lot of them were taken.

Next time, I'll change the file names to something generic like Where's Waldo picture 1.9.gif

Since you like this game, would you mind putting a link in your sig?  I'm having a little trouble getting new players.30.gif

I really doubt that this is a replicated version of the actual monument, since this is in another country on another continent.

    HEY NO CHEATING!  Very nice!!

That's the Sydney Opera Hall in Sydney, Australia, and I think, technically, the continent is Oceana (not Australia).

    1.  There are about 2500 venues per year here, and about 4 million people visit each year as well.

    2.  First performance: Sergei Prokofiev's War and Peace on Sept 28, 1973.

The Opera House was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II on October 2, 1973. This was actually the third performance, though, at the hall.  The opening was televised and included fireworks and a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9.

    3.  The Sydney Opera House has about 1000 rooms, including five theatres, five rehearsal studios, two main halls, four restaurants, six bars and numerous souvenir shops.

Re: the last one...  I thought I was being clever and coy by hiding my answer within my response that represents the native cultures of Brazil and South America but I can fully understand as that could be misconstrued as not answering the country and continent.  I now realize I got the country wrong... oops... and I DO suppose that there could be a monument to those people of native cultures... somewhere completely different, but... oh well.  1.gif

That's the Tokyo Tower in Tokyo, Japan in Asia.  333 m (1,092 ft) high, built in 1958, modeled after the Eiffel Tower, and actually it's a radio tower.

It's actually 30 m taller than the Eiffel Tower, but it's 3000 pounds lighter, due to the advancement of building materials and construction techniques and between 1889 and 1958.
