I'm new to this game, wondering if it is possible to build an industrial city? Nothing but factories and all those stuff. Do I have to have residential and commercial? I have another city so manpower can come from there?

Me and a friend of mine have tried doing this with some mixed results. People don't like commuting to generic industrial buildings, but they don't mind going to a city to work in a placed building.

You can always experiment in a fresh region. If you do, please report back here and let us all know! SimCity's mechanics are puzzling and confusing at times. Any peeks behind the veils of code would be welcome!

I tried an industrial city with nothing but industrial that had no residential or commercial. What happens is I get commuters and they fill the industry and produce freight but it does not seen to register within the regional system (city to city). So yes I get commuters and fill the jobs (the industry building say they have no workers) but flipping back to my residential city that supports the industry it wouldn't register as anyone having a job nor do I see them commute. I didn't use mass transit or anything either. It has been a few days since I tried so I will try again.

I tried but the factories just said they had no workers and no where to ship the frieght.  I dont think the commute system is working correctly.

They touted how important region play was yet it is horribly broken.... This game is a mess.

My short experience has yielded this basic piece of knowledge: No. Freight doesn't get shipped out of town. Doesn't matter if you ship it by truck (standard), plane, train, or ship. It won't leave your town. If it is freight, it lives and dies there.

Furthermore, if that freight isn't delivered somewhere then the factory doesn't make money. If the factory doesn't make money, then it closes down.

So, if you want to have an industrial district, you NEED commercial to buy the freight. Commercial, however, doesn't need the freight. It auto-generates its goods. They are not based on the freight it receives.

It's possible to have a 50% Commercial, 50% Residential town. It is not possible to have any combination of Industrial and Residential unless there is also a sufficient amount of Commercial there to buy up the Industrial freight product.

I've had a very different experience. If you build trade depots with the freight cargo hold then the factories do make money and survive. I also had freight transfer from my industrial city to my more commercial heavy cities.

I must note though that like comments above; i had a hard time keeping workers in the factories. Everything would be great then it would only register about 60 workers. I also only had about 160 freight being transfered to my other cities out of the 30k i was producing.

Moral of the story: The systems are in place to make an industrial city work, they just don't actually work well enough. And as you pointed out...commercial is not actually effected by freight meaning that....atm....an industrial city is a waste of time (logistically speaking of course!)

well wouldent it work to build a industrial and shopping town.

so 50% of the map with industry

and rest with commercial

then the gods created in the industry would be deliverd to the stores in the commercial zones

in another city in the region you place down allot residential

that need to travel to the stores in another city to shop?

or will those residential complain to much about that?

I think there is a breakdown on the region side for filling those industrial jobs.
