My "article" on simcity - how bad is it

i think im gonna try give this game what it deserves... a proper critique. i was a big fan on simcity 4, and with all the updates you could get from places like simtropolis, simcity 4 became an awesome game. and now here we all are, expecting the most amazing game in the world with the new simcity... and im also disappointed. They say that "this game is still a big hit, and really popular" but, i think they're wrong. You'd think at this day and age, with all the technology in the world, that they could make this game allow for awesome things like tunnels and making your own region and mountains and terrain, and subway systems, and roads that go over the top of other roads, and all this that you could pretty much do in simcity 4...

 - whats good?

i love the fact that you can customize things with upgrades. I find it cool how you can decide to put a city hall and place that expansion at the back or to the left of the building, and expand parks, and all that and i think thats cool. the curvy roads are also pretty cool. finally what i also look (although it can get annoying saving up money to do all this) is how you can research things with your university, to unlock other cool ugrades to buildings.

- whats bad?

everything else... really... im gonna compare this simcity, to what you could do, downloading those "extras" from "simtropolis".

the city tiles are small... i mean really, you only get enough room to build a small city at that, in simcity 4 you had enough room to create a city and some suburbs and put a seaport in the corner of the city and still have room for an airport, but in this, you barely have enough room for your city, and a stadium and whatever else? then i was EXTREMELY dissapointed with the graphics to say the least... i honestly thought that at this day and age the graphics could have been better? and then to make this all better, you can't do things like make beaches, make piers, and boat terminals and "sunken highways" and tunnels, and bridges. And lastly, the fact that, although you can make curvy roads, and buildings can grow on them, your left with alot of green space between buildings and instead of making a dense city, it almost looks like you have a "green" city. there is alot more, but i'd rather not...

Yeah this game isn't that great even after the always online DRM and server connectivity issues are put aside. They really simplified the game in order to make this a grand social experiment for casual gamers with constant online connectivity. And while glassbox is nice, in the end this game leaves you frustrated with all of the bad design decisions and limitations they chose to impose on the player.

I agree with you completely. After you place a police and fire station, schools, garbage dumps, street car/bus stops, power and water plants, and whatever else you virtually "need" to make a functioning city, you have a small space left for RCI zoning. I'm not taking too kindly on the whole "pure city specialization" concept either; I like to build self-sustaining cities.

Charizard and Catchin22: for the sake of the rest of us, your little conversation has been removed.

If you two can't manage to play nicely, we'll be sending you both to the principal's office.

(If you still don't get it, you need to discuss the issues, not each other.)

Now back to the topic...

Where did you buy it from? Dont just resign yourself to buying a duff game, please send it back for a refund. Especially if you were sensible enough to buy it from Amazon who make it very easy to return things. I hate seeing people who seem to have resigned to having wasted loads of their money on a duff game. SEND IT BACK if its no good. Or at least try to get a credit note.
