Now I haven't played the originals from the early 90's but this new X:COM game, 'Enemy Unknown' is amazing.  I dumped 25 hours into it the first week after I bought it.  The plot is engaging, almost as much as the Mass Effect franchise and if you ramp the difficulty level up all the way, it's more of a tactical challenge then any civ or board gpost-466230-0-51788600-1361169436_thumb.post-466230-0-51788600-1361169436_thumb.ame I've ever played.  Also knowing that if any of your squad mates dies, they are lost forever, ads a since of urgency and drama to each engagement.  Any body else played this game yet? If not I highly recommend it for any fellow tactical or turn based strategy enthusiasts.

Ive played it quite a bit. And damn, does that game hate me! The first few levels are okay, but because I don't encounter enough alien ships I don't get a lot of alien alloys which means I can't do research or build all the fancy new weapons. So now Im encountering the higher level enemies while only one person has a laser gun. Im screwed.

It does bother me a bit that there is so much artificial choice built into it. You can always only be at one place at the time, but you would think that with such overwhelming proof of hostile alien life forms everyone would start giving money to the guys that are actively combating the aliens so they could get more transport ships and hire more teammates so they could reach more than one place at the same time <_<

I know what you mean about hard to come by alloys.  The way I would counter that is by accepting only missions that offer them as rewards.  Good point about the world owning up and funding the X:COM unit.  But to be honest I like that you must choose to save one country and let the other two suffer at the whims of invading aliens.  It represents most tactical situations in real life where there is no "golden route" to save all.  Every decision comes with a consequence that you have to be able to live with.

Sweet, I'm glad you started this post. I did buy the game but have been super busy and haven't been able to start it yet. Since I did spend hours playing the playstation title back in high school, I've wanted to have like a whole weekend to dive into it, but just my luck, no weekends free... But, now I'm getting some good review info on the, thanks

Ah, the new one... I played both of the old games (UFO Defense and Terror From the Deep (TFTD)), and they belong to my all-time favourites. I'm currently watching an awesome TFTD Let's Play by a Belgian guy called yaeri2. He plays well (no reloads at all!!), and I like both his accent and his commentary in general. So if you want to get an impression of one the older games, I can recommend this Let's Play. He's very experienced, though, so if you appreciate seeing a newbie player being surprised, then you won't get that in his videos. Other players, however, reload endless times. :lost:

What bothers me about the new game is that you cannot have as many soldiers as you used to. I also kinda liked the movement point system in the old games, that's why I'm somewhat reluctant. It would be interesting to read the opinion of someone who played the old classics.

This game is so awesome, it is worth the price you put into it, the RoI in terms of entertainment is quite high. I would recommend you do a lap around nexusmods.com to put up some mods to change some mechanics of the game (damage, panic logic, aerial combat, among other things), you wont be dissapointed at all.

Right now im on a Impossible/Ironman run, and boy DOES IT HURT, they might not catch all of the good things the old XCOM has, but they do come in a close second to it.

    10/10.
