Hopefully this post is not misplaced; I didn't see an introduction forum anywhere. Just as a bit of background, I played the first 3 SimCity games a TON back in the day. I used to own 4 a number of years ago, probably when it was released, but became bored/frustrated with it and had since given up and eventually lost it. Wifey re-bought it for my birthday the other day so I really would like to give it another good go.

I have a LOT of very basic questions. I read the stickies but the topics covered there aren't really what I was looking for (although they are quite handy.)

Where is a good place to find just bare-bones general info, or for questions on such things?

Welcome to Simtropolis!

Actually, there is an down in the New Members Section, but don't worry about it. This is probably a better forum section to post in and get noticed anyway.

As for SimCity 4 itself, the in-game tutorials are the best starting point for getting back into the game. Next you'll want to look in the Omnibus (it's one of the tabs at the top of the page here), which has a collection of articles like "How to start your first city" or "Growing your city to 40,000."

Once you've gotten back into the swing of things, there's a ton of custom content available here on the STEX. There are things from to custom regions to new buildings (called BATs in SC4 lingo).

Good advice. What version of the game did you get? You can find out by searching in windows explorer for SimCity 4.exe then examining the version number. For Vista and later, simply hovering over the file name should give it to you. Earlier, right click and open properties, then look on the version tab.

Please post your version. If you have something earlier than 1,1,640 we have some fixes for you.

Thanks guys. My game was the deluxe version as a download via gamestop, i'll have to check the v number.

Played the ingame tutorial sections, but that didn't help a whole lot >

If your game runs without a disk in the CD drive, then you have version 1,1,641 which is the latest, all-singing, all-dancing version from EA/Maxis. You are free to use any custom content you can find.

Perhaps the best tutorials around here can be found in the Omnibus. It is a tab at the head of the page. Scroll down a little to find the index. Over the last few years some serious tutorials have been developed by the membership and added to this tome. It is very likely the most comprehensive set of documentation available.

It is amazing that new members don't avail themselves of the sites services when a little exploration would solve many problems.
