Hi guys, my city is now growing fairly large and I have a good amount of large buildings, what is the purpose of the Landmark buildings you can buy and place in the city (I>E Empire state building, etc...). Are they just fot show or do they actually create jobs like any rgular building or just increase demand? Are they worth placing around your city for the cost, have a lot of money now.

They don't create jobs, although there is a mod which will allow you to add that function to landmarks. I don't use it, so I'm not sure how well it works. But basically, landmarks boost desirability, contribute to a growth in wealth, and generally make your Sims happy. They probably give a boost to tourism as well. So if you have the money, sure it's worth plopping some.

    Landmarks provide two main benefits:

    • An increase in local commercial desirability.
    • An increase in city-wide mayor rating.

Both commercial services (CS) and commercial offices (CO) benefit from being near landmarks. Sims are attracted to visit landmarks, so if they are located near to commercial zones, they will therefore receive more customers. Landmarks also boost the prestige of the land, benefiting the commercial offices. In a sense, this provides the offices with a good reputation, giving Sims the desire to work there. Take a look at the desirability data view to see how landmarks visually impact desirability in different areas of your city. It is worth noting that the office type landmarks (e.g. Bank of China Tower, Chrysler Building) provide the greatest boost to commercial desirability.

Mayor rating is also positively impacted from the presence of landmarks. The mayor rating boost covers the whole of your city, so all areas will benefit. However, Alcatraz is the only landmark that does have a slight negative effect on the city-wide mayor rating (although it still provides a boost in commercial desirability). The top mayor rating boosters include:

    - Arc de Triomphe

    - Great Pyramid

    - U.S. Capitol Building

In summary, as a general rule, the more expensive the landmark (initial and maintenance costs), the more it will benefit you city. When building any landmark, it is therefore important to think carefully about its placement, and whether you will be able to maintain it. Remember, if you reduce the monthly costs to maintain them, their impact on your city will be reduced. So, yes, landmarks are worth investing in, as long as you can continue to maintain them.

I've pretty much stopped using landmarks because they usually occupy too much land.
