Don't know. Best place to ask this is in the STEX forum.

It is possible because I've done it. Check the LRM thread in the modding section of the forums. Maarten gave me instructions on how to alter his Light Replacement Mod. Sorry I can't give you a direct link, I'm responding using my phone.

  1. Is it possible since this thread was posted...is editing the default game...possible?
  2. If not, has anyone found a way to get rid of these streetlights without affecting the game negatively too much?

Theoretically, if it is possible to override Maxis streetlights with custom models, then it should also be possible to override Maxis streetlights with an invisible model. There is no influence on the game because streetlights are merely eye candy, if I'm not mistaken, and do not have any effect.

The bad news is that a mod to remove streetlights altogether has not yet been written, at least not to my knowledge.

EDIT

By the way, I just realised that you have bumped not one, but two threads asking this question. Please don't do that in future. You push down more threads than necessary this way, and people may reply to either thread, which may result in answers being given twice and the entire discussion becoming cluttered and out of focus. Simply focus on one thread instead.
