Hello, my name is Chokkie and I've only just started playing SimCity4, after a long break from SimCity2000. Anyway I'm currently experimenting with the basic Maxis functions by attempting to build a small farm town. So far I've created a small farm town with a stable 1000+ population with a managable income which is higher than the spending. Anyway I was wondering how do I prevent potholes? I've tried adding extra bus stops but that doesn't seem to be doing a thing. Also is there a way to rename a town? Here's some pics:

Potholes appear when you lower the transportation budget. Can't remember well, but I think there's a "roads maintenance" slider or whatever. One of the first lessons you have to learn from the game is "NEVER touch the roads budget". It does a lot of hurt to your city (specially in an aesthetic way) and saves very little money.

Yeah I did muck around with that for a while, realized that it was a mistake and changed it back to the original settings but I must have forgot to save or something. Anyway that problem seems to be fixed.

So is it possible to rename a city?

Yes. Open the cheats menu (Ctrl-X), and type "whererufrom (Space) City Name". If you want to make the city name two words or more, you must put it in quotation marks.

I would recommend downloading the NAM, all it's plugins, and Extra Cheats, plus tram stations.

Slow and steady wins the race. As usual, everyone has assumed you have the most up-to-date version of the game (the same as theirs). You shouldn't download anything until you are sure what you get will work and not crash your game.

In windows explorer (if you are running windows 7) navigate to C:\Program Files ... \SimCity 4\Apps and hover your mouse over the executable for the game - SimCity4.exe. The file system should report the build version of the game.

Possibilities:

< 1,1,638 is a raw game that needs updating

1,1,638 SimCity 4 Deluxe (or Rush Hour) updated to the bug fix level

1,1,640 the same but updated to show night lights in BATs that are so constructed

1,1,641 SimCity 4 Deluxe Digital Download fully updated and able to run without a disk in the drive.

In any of the last three states you can run most downloaded custom content from any of the exchanges, however only the last two will have BAT related night lights. (BAT is Building Architect Tool used for making new buildings).

I, too, recommend adding the Network Addon Mod (NAM) as a basic thing to have. The rest can come as you learn more and want to expand your horizons.

One thing, with custom content, there is often extensive documentation. This is for your benefit and you should read it all carefully. This is especially true with NAM and NAM related extensions.

If you download the NAM, be sure also to get the NAM Hotfix which repairs some omissions in the release.

I've got the SimCity4 delux edition. I've had a look at some BATs and I'll definately be downloading some of them but what do you get from NAM?

Everything. It's almost like a successor to the Rush Hour expansion pack. It adds a lot more networks, along with a number of customization features, and a traffic simulator that works far better than the original Maxis one.

Things that NAM add are some extra features for street, road, avenue, highway, and rail, and some new things, such as GLR system, canal, and pedmalls, and make the sims pathfinding to become much more realistic by using the fastest, not the shortest way. Another that, NAM is also the dependency of some other mods that also made by NAM Team. Something that you must have too soon after NAM is the hotfix package. While the traffic simulator is the part of NAM too, but it's not included as part of the main download, i thought. I think there still some other patches that you must download too, the official patches by maxis that once available in simcity.com till EA stop theur support toward the official site, but that's not the end of those patches. At this moment, they still available in SC4 Devotion, not need to have an account, as i know, and just look at EA support part, than you could download some EA patches there.

Perhaps you're thinking of the Traffic Simulator Configuration Tool, which is an optional customization tool. You can download this with the NAM or not, but the NAM traffic simulator runs just fine without it.
