I don't understand the popularity of this, youtube brings out some strange things.

One of the quirks of pop culture is that the "in" thing doesn't have to make any sense whatsoever for it to be wildly popular.

In other words, the video eliminates all language barriers. It just has to be fun.

I suspect that a large part of the video's success is that it many individuals who watch it are left with a "lolwut" response. Once you read what the song/video is about, it loses a lot of its amusement.

I can think of the most popular things on the net for the past few years:

    2012: Gangnam Style

2011: Friday / Nyan Cat / Winning (Charlie Sheen)

2010: Bed Intruder / Double Rainbow

This song has yet to get old. Just yesterday I saw a mashup that I lol'd at:

um . . . I thought it was a satire about conspicuous consumption in South Korea. The translation of the lyrics that I read has some innuendos but nothing objectionable that I saw, especially considering the junk that passes for lyrics in some music here.

In my experiences thus far, a significant portion of the video's enjoyment factor is that it appears to be complete nonsense thrown together in a humorous way. Once it is explained to the individual that the artist might have a serious point behind the song, the amusement factor seems to disappear completely, and with it, the enjoyment of the song.

I believe that you are being more serious than he is. As I understand the lyrics, it is satire directed at people who drink expensive coffee, act respectable during the day, and party hardy at night. It's not like he is making fun of starving babies.

Isn't the song trying to depict Gangnam (a district of Seoul) to a well to do place like Beverly Hills?

For example, in the opening scene you get the perspective he's on a beach, but it turns out to be a playground. I find that contrast pretty amusing, and it adds another dimension to the visuals and the song, even though I don't really know what he's saying.

It has a subtle meaning, pertaining to South Koreans' conspicuous consumption, which means that South Koreans tend to buy merchandises, regardless of the cost, that has an elegant, wealthy appearance on them. Since, most ordinary South Koreans are middle-class, often their pseudo-opulent exhibitions make them look, "classy, but cheesy".

Now doesn't this depend on available funds? How is credit card debt going in SK?

    It's a problem

A government program instituted in 1999 to stimulate the domestic economy by getting thrifty citizens to borrow and spend has been too successful. Today, every working South Korean has on average four credit cards and some 2.2 million people are behind on their payments, having rung up a staggering total of about $100 billion in credit-card debt. That's $2,000 in debt for every Korean, an amount equal to roughly a quarter of the country's annual economic output.

North Korea needs to collapse to provide the South with resources to repay such debt.

What resources would be available from bankrupt North Korea? All they have is scrap metal.

North Korea, as a state, is bankrupt; however, their territory contains a great deal of resources, such as Uranium, Plutonium, Gold, Silver, Molybdenum, etc. (In fact, they are using uranium and plutonium to ignite fuel rods for intercontinental nuclear missiles.)

Can't have very much Plutonium as it has a relatively fast decay rate, geologically speaking. Refining it is not only tricky but very dangerous.

They'll use nuclear bombs made out of it, before they decay. :D

College Humor made a funny video where the song is taken out and replaced with sound effects matching the surroundings.

    --Ocram

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

    Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

"If you try to please everybody, you often times end up pleasing nobody, especially yourself. When somebody offers to do a favor for free, like making a mod for SimCity 4, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." - Twilight Sparkle after playing SimCity

"Being a mayor or a content creator for SimCity 4 is a heavy responsibility, Patrick. Each city and each custom content is like a child, and must be treated as such." - SpongeBob Squarepants after playing SimCity

He wasn't funny, and isn't. I guess most people don't remember the results of having him around. I, unfortunately, do. I used to have lots of friends and acquaintances that did too, some of them rather personally. Most are gone now.

The hitler version is just disturbing, the one with no music is pretty clever. The North Korea one is mildly funny, but could've been better. The only part that really did it for me was the "back to work!" line.

Yeah, PSY's a clever man for making such an interesting music and video.
