The introduction of a new kind of music must be shunned as imperilling the

whole state, for styles of music are never disturbed without affecting

the most important political institutions. ... The new style, gradually

gaining a lodgement, quietly insinuates itself into manners and customs,

and from it ... goes on to attack laws and constitutions, displaying the

utmost impudence, until it ends by overturning everything.

-- Plato, "Republic", 370 B.C.

That is an interesting quote. It is especially interesting seeing as we know very little about how Ancient Greek music sounded like. We only know how their instruments (most likely) sounded like and the stories they told.

--Ocram

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

    Honestly, that's an inspirational quote.

I know perfectly where this song will end: in the drawer of the songs for parties. Just like We No Speak Americano by Yolanda Be Cool, and another lots of songs.

The Greeks used the pentatonic scale (invented by Pythagoras), so if you want to hear a tune in that scale listen to Amazing Grace. The black keys on the piano form a pentatonic scale.

The West Indies won the T20 Cricket World Cup final v Sri Lanka and celebrated Gangnam Style.

I had no idea what it was until I came accros this thread, and now it makes sense, sort of :uhm:.

The West Indies are in the Caribbean, but not all the caribbean islands are West Indies.

Countries such as Cuba and Haiti are not West Indian.

"Ninety percent of everything is crap"

    -- Sturgeon's Law, 1951

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I say, the only thing that matters is whether which "crap" is better: This or that.

    Nothing says that it will.

K-pop is the best genre of music, next to A-Pop.

There are charts (lists) and then there are charts. My chart starts with Claudio Monteverdi and runs forward to the present. Right now I think the top seed is a Quebecois composer named Rideout.

Why not. He has had a lot to do with modern dance.

I was Stuck in traffic yesterday night in the bar/club district of my town, and a guy dressed like PSY (really well I might add) did the Gangnam Style dance on the crosswalk right in front of me. Made my night.

I thought it was amusing to watch Fareed Zakaria in all seriousness contrast South Korea's "Oppa Gungam Style" against the sclerotic political and cultural context of the neighboring People's Republic of China on his weekly CNN show "GPS- Global Public Square."

Why China can't do Gungnam Style

Seems the legacy of Mao's wife Jiang Qing's cultural revolution of the theatrical and patriotic arts still continues long after she was purged with the Gang of Four. Is "The Blue Kite" still banned on the mainland? Meanwhile, Pyongyang must be apopletic with fear of Gangnam Style trickling across the border--I'm sure the executions are already taking place.

Who would have thought that K-Pop and Gungnam Style are really all about the triangulation of geopolitical spheres of influence in East Asia?

^ Rather a narrow attitude. You dismiss five centuries of development, just like that.

    Classical is classic, indeed.

I fully respect pre-modern music genres and others.

However, K-pop is currently rising in trend, next to A-Pop. It's a fact, and it's reality.
