No traffic from industry?

When I look what traffic is coming from my industry part it only shows like 2 cars and 100 trucks. They do not need workers or what? No subway/train is going there so they can only go by car but apparently they refuse or something? It also shows that 170/175 is working there etc.

Is it a bug?

The simulator doesn't work like glass box. It just generates random traffic that matches with the general area. Industrial areas see alot of trucks, residential alot of cars. No bug- just the game wasn't made with such a high degree of accuracy when it comes to cars on the road- as it wasn't really necessary i guess.

Is there another place for the Sims to work? Such as a large commercial zone, or other city? Also, the buildings seem to say that more people work there than people commute.

Wouldn't that just refer to the automata, I think thy are asking about commute amount, like how many sims commute to the industrial zone, not how much automata the game puts on the roads.

Commuters dont really matter so much, automata certainly doesnt. What matters is, are the jobs available in your Ind. zones being filled or not. If you got NaM, and the jobs available are being majority filled...no problem. And it sounds like you got near 100% employment at the one factory, Id say all good...

The simulator simulates work-home traffic. This means that it isn't random, what you see at the street is random but this is only for graphics. When you look at the route query you see that for every house there is a destination available. The simulator looks for a job matching the wealth of the citizen, then it simulates a traffic pattern to that destination, do this for every resident in the city for as well morning-commute as evening-commute and you have work-home traffic for the whole city. For as far as I heard about the glassbox engine is that this simulator takes care of much more activities in daily life. It also simulates traffic from factories to commercial zones.

I have to agree with Nukeu123, this is probably just a glitch in the game.

No, there is no bug involved, and traffic certainly isn't random.

I have explained it many times, and I will explain it again:

When you query an industrial building and it says "170/75 jobs", this does NOT! - I repeat - NOT! mean that 170 out of a possible 175 Sims are working there.

What it means is that given the current local desirability level, this facility offers 170 out of a possible 175 jobs to be filled by workers. It does not show how many people are working there.

If you want to see how many people are actually working there, you can use the route query tool on the industrial facility. It takes a while for the simulator to adapt to any new industrial (and commercial) building, so commuters may start to arrive there a few weeks after the building grew, and both commuter numbers and commute paths may change quite a bit over the first few months before they settle and stabilise.

If the number you see in the route query is considerably lower than the number of jobs offered by the facility, it means that your traffic system is inadequate or that your commuters find jobs that are easier to reach.

Buildings with a low rate of job positions that are actually filled will decrease demand, but they don't employ many Sims.

I've wondered this for some time. I have entire industrial districts that get no commuters (no workers if TWrecks is right, and I'm sure he is). We're talking about industries that have existed not just for a few weeks, but for decades. The most extreme example is a large area across a river from my region's commercial center. I guess they just find it easier to get to the commercial areas, even though the industries are often closer to the residents? Do sims show a preference for CO$$$ jobs over I$$$

But while I am busy with asking, I think I have a bug or problem with my traffic. My subway and trainsystem is pretty big and on all the good spots. But............ My sims only travel by car!?!?

Why I opened this topic is because I had an industrial part at the other side of the river and you could only get there by train or by subway, no traffic was seen there besides trucks. As I got tired of it I made a bridge for cars, and suddenly there are huge amounts of cars going there.

Why is it that they dont take the train? I have NAM installed with default settings.

I noticed the same with my industry, but the commute time was short so it didn't bother me that much. Maybe it has something to do with the maximum jobs provided by factories. In my cities the mass transit functions the way it should in commercial and residential zones. Industrial zones could provide less jobs than commercial zones, this might lead to a bigger influence if the desirability is low. I'm not sure if that is indeed the case though, so maybe you could check that. ;)

It is not that. They travel 0 by subway and 0 by train. It really makes no sense at all, they only go by car or foot.

The game has a hidden rule that all jobs must be reachable by car in order for Sims to work at them, even if they don't take cars to get there. But once you made your bridge, Sims should be able to take the train as well.

The only thing I can think of here is the location of your train stations. You should have enough of them, and they should specifically be in places that are convenient for the Sims. Otherwise, the Sims may find it faster just to drive directly to their jobs, even though the train is much faster than driving.

If this doesn't solve your problem, try posting a picture of the area.

All of a sudden it worked (I changed nothing) for like 2 years. And as fast as it went it also disappeared, only cars now again... Not even busses.

Must be some kind of plugin problem I guess?

Nope, don't think so. Make a road connection. As z1 said, jobs must be theoretically reachable by car.

And a screenshot would indeed be helpful.

Are you the NAM mod.? Think you that the time taht the game use for find a pathfinder is very limited in the original game. The NAM and SPAM mods, modifie this and It's demostrate that the distance in wich travel the sims to work is increased. If you have the original game, it apply one very limited time, If do not find one solution in this time, no job is adjudicated. Therefore, installing MODS is an aventage.

And the other and, if sims are accomodates and the city is an equilibrium, the paths are fixed and the sims will not change its cars by another mass traffic. One mean would be cut someone road or avenue and force to sims to find one other way to travel. But if the mass traffic that you draw is the unique one, increase residential zones y force sims travel far away and create new paths. The condition is not jobs available next home.

I don't think that you have a bug in the game...

So the first 10 years or something they only traveled by car and by foot, then for 1 year it suddenly worked and they took the train, bus and subway as well and now they once again only go by car and foot.....

And another question (man I keep asking), I installed a plugin for pedestrians on the avenue or something like that but I want to remove it. I cant find it, anyone knows the name?

Pedestrians on the avenue? Can you tell what is the purpose of that plugin? Is it a mod? Or some kind of ploppable lots with pedestrians overpasses over avenue?

If you can post a picture of that plugin that would be helpful, otherwise a snapshot of your plugins folder

There are more people walking around. Thought it would make it more realistic but since I installed it lots of cars crash for some reason. And its annoying to see.

Sounds like some traffic generator thingy... sorry, I can't tell you more because I don't know the plugin in question.

Lesson learned: Manage that plugins folder. Use sub-folders. Give it a structure. Name folders wisely and logically. The situation you are experiencing now is actually the "acid test" for any plugins folder: There is an annoying plugin among my stuff, and I want to delete it. Will I find it? If the answer is "Yes, gimme a minute", your plugins folder is adequately organised. If your answer is "OMG, what am I to do?", your plugins folder in unorganised and likely to cause some grief sooner or later.

Another tidbit while I'm at it: It's terribly hard to organise a plugins folder once chaos has had its way. It's easier to make a new one, come up with a logical structure, move stuff over to where it belongs, name everything logically and meaningfully.

And if much of this sounds like I speak from experience, that's probably because I do. :P

Thanks for the explanation, i didn't know this either.

    A related question:

I noticed recently that vacant (commercial) buildings still have workers commuting. How is that possible?

Depends on the reason for abandonment. If the abandonment is something you have fixed, the building is in recovery.

    The reason was "low demand".

But i assume from your answer that a vacant building should not have commuters. Perhaps they query wasn't updating fast enough.

    Thanks anyway :)

Yeah, that might be. Another possibility: The traffic simulator always takes a while to re-calculate everything and adapt to changes, so traffic patterns will settle over time, not immediately. That's quite funny whenever you make large changes to your city and change the route query immediately after - you will see wild glitches for a while.
