Twenty-five years ago, the one dollar coin became legal tender in Canada. It was followed hard upon by the two dollar coin. Paper currency in these denominations in Canada are now collectors' items.

The one dollar coin is called a Loonie because it has an engraved Loon on the reverse.

The original two dollar coin had a bear, but people being what they are it became the Twonie.

The expected five dollar coin has yet to materialize. There have been several suggested sobriquets:

Fiver, Porky, Buggsie, etc. This reporter thinks the Royal Canadian Mint should open negotiations with Warner Brothers, Inc. We seem to be infringement of their trademarks.

As of September, the lowly one cent coin, the maple-leaf penny, is denigrated and is expected to go out of circulation over the next few years. Numismatists note: If you have an uncirculated or better 2012 Canadian Penny, hang on to it. We stopped minting them this month. In about a century they might be worth more than the face.
