Residents suddenly becoming jobless?

I'm not using any demand mods or anything, just NAM. I was playing in a medium-sized city (actually Rush Hour Tutorial). I had dirty industry and low residential sections as well as high wealth residential apartments and commercial office towers. I hadn't built any high tech industries yet. However, when I zoned my first series of high tech industry lots, my high wealth residential apartment towers suddenly began becoming jobless. And then after that the demand for high wealth residents, commercial office towers, and high tech industry started going down too. So now those apartment and office towers are essentially abandoned and I have demand for low wealth RCI. What gives? I've provided a variety of commute options as well as education, health for my sims.

Actually, the R$$$, I-HT and CO towers overgrew their demand. In this case, both R$$$ and CO$$$ get built and never occupied, and due to the oversupply, demand falls, naturally. Commute options have very little to do with abandonment once you get NAM, its actually job availability, in this case, the CO$$$ towers abandon and so does the R$$$ towers due to a lack of jobs. In this case, you should have demolished dirty industry(I-D) for manufacturing industry(I-M), as I-M employs both medium wealth and low wealth sims, and some R$$$ as well.

My strategy is to raise taxes for R$$$ to 12% and R$$ to 9.8%, so they will grow but slower and more progressive.

Strongly suggest staying away from Timbuktu as a play region. It has some special characteristics due to the tutorial aspects and may "misbehave".

You are aware of IHT and R$$$ bug of the game?

The bug manifests as R$$$ Sims are somehow being stopped working at IHT. So, there is demand for R$$$ and they move into your city then massively being left with no jobs, with entire neighborhoods being abandoned and dilapidated.

You can easily check it by clicking on your IHT buildings and seeing who's coming to work. If no R$$$ Sim is working there, u have a bug.

The mod that fixes that is called IHT census. If u cannot find it on STEX contact me to send u the little file :)

Hmm I think this may be it. When I use the route query tool for the IHT buildings, I only see medium wealth residents commuting to them. When I query the abandoned high wealth residential apartments, it says "abandoned due to commute time." The high wealth apartments that do exist have residents working somewhere else in the city.

Is this the mod your talking about:

It seems strange that Maxis wouldn't fix such a game-destroying bug after all these years. Does it only happen in Timbuktu or something?

    Yes, thats it! :D

Yea, quite an error from Maxis. Luckily, moders have fixed a lot of bugs of the game! There was awful bug with Opera house as well that was also being fixed. It's not happening just in Timbuktu but everywhere. It's an ingame bug.

I remember R$$$ Sims massively abandoning their fancy towers in my cities.

And Opera house bug caused that a city of mine in some moment got from 900k to 600k residents! It lost 300k Sims in a moment almost destroying my efforts to make a metropolis!

Luckily, all that is being fixed. The only bug not being able to be fixed is the 'Eternal commuter bug'! The worst one!

But i don't want to scare you :) I hope u fixed this problem and enjoying your city now. Just remember, R$$$ Sims have to be limitet around 20% of the city population. They won't have jobs if they overpopulate the city, anyway.

    Good luck!

Hmm that didn't seem to fix the problem. I'm thinking it probably is the eternal commuter bug. When I click on the abandoned high wealth residential buildings, it says "Abandoned due to commute time." The office towers are abandoned too. I guess I'll have to start over again.
