SC4 Multitasking

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else multitasks playing Sim City 4?

I have it open in a window on the left and then browse the internet, do my Uni work, etc on the other side.

The essay might take ten times longer but it's ten times more bearable! :)

I do it too, but there's loads of people saying you actually shouldn't because of CPU usage. I found if you use '-CPUCount:1' in the command line and tell other programs to use the other core(s) it should be fine, just thought I'd mention it. :) Of course this only works if you at least have a dual core procesor... ;)

I love madtv! I'm a Brit, so I haven't seen it on TV here but I youtube it every now and then for a few laughs.

I don't seem to have any trouble. I have SC4, this browser and iTunes all running at the moment. Mind you, I have a quad-core and two dedicated graphics cards - when I was laptop shoppin I said SC4 was a priority ;)

Actually it is trivial to do this on modern hardware. You simply give the single-threaded game its own processor and you can do what you like. One caution, however. The game needs to keep focus during saves. If you don't stay with it, you may or may not lose your city.

I run Linux, so I can actually shift desktops and let the game mumble away to itself while I do other things. It is trivial to switch between desktops. All of these can have multiple windows. At one point recently I was running Firefox, the System Monitor and the game each in its own desktop.

    I like your style!

I run 6 monitors, and yes, I use them all and all the time :D

Usually one monitor is running sc4. Another has terraformer. 3rd has firefox just with forums. 4th has FF just for chat. 5th is for system monitors only and maybe teamspeak/vent if I feel like talking and 6th is usually some type of movie/tv show. Plans are in the works to add 2 42 inch TV's for a total of 2 main monitors and 6 secondaries.

I have skype open (usually in a skype call), teamspeak, ST chat window, music, and FF. All with Sim City running in the background.

No problem on my PC. Checking email, having multiple browser windows and tabs open, listening to music via winamp and doing a lot of other stuff while having a SC4 window open.

Modern gear with lots of memory and processors can do whatever you like, but remember the caution about saves.

    You won't lose your city.

It might not render an image of it so it looks blank in region-view, but when you actually go back into that city everything'll still be there just as you left it.

It is common in this situation to lose the snapshot in the region, but when the area of the city is empty (not green), it has been corrupted. I've only had this happen a couple of times in 10 years of playing, but once bitten twice shy.
