Well, the year is 2012. There will be in june federal elections in Mexico, and I guess in the United States too.

I'm a first-timer voter, so I want to know what should I know for the exercise correctly my right to vote. I mean, like codes, laws, candidates, etc... what are your advices for a first-timer voter?

Ah, and of course, this thread is for discussion around the electoral subjects and topics too. In the case of United States there is the thread American Politics, but this is an ideal topic too.

We don't know much about the Mexican electoral system. Surely it is not as unwieldy as the one in the United States of America.

Alejandro, speak to some elder who has participated in the past. Any of your professors will do. Find out what you need to do to exercise your franchise. Don't be influenced by their political opinions, however. Make up your own mind.

It is important the everyone who can, does vote. This is especially true of young people because you are the future of your country, and you need to start to have a say in the way things are going. In a federal election you may find yourself voting for a candidate in each legislative chamber concerned with your government. Are you having only an election for your state's Deputies or is a Senate election on the agenda as well?

Because the election of your Chamber of Deputies is mixed proportional you get to vote for a single Deputy, but pay attention to the party he is a member of because you are also voting for the proportional selected members of that party as well. The senate election is only first-past-the-post (the guy with the most votes wins).

So in the case of candidates running as deputies, you must weigh the party platforms as well as that of the individual person you think should represent you for the next three years.

Get as many of your young friends who have also been enfranchised this year to go and vote as well. Since you have elections every three years, it is important to get in the habit and perhaps, to get involved in the activities of the party of your choice.

Your federal system is interesting and different from that of many other countries.

The most important thing to remember is that people who don't vote have no right to complain. They get the government they deserve.

This elections, in july (sorry the mistake), we are going to vote for president, senate and deputation in the federal level; at state level the elections will be for governor of Jalisco, local deputation and mayors in some municipalities and cities (in my case, mayor of Zapopan).

In president elections, the most important, there are 4 candidates:

• Josefina Vázquez Mota, PAN
  
• Enrique Peña Nieto, PRI
  
• Andrés Manuel López Obrador, PRD
  
• Gabriel Quadri de la Torre, Nueva Alianza

In the US it won't matter, vote either Mitt or Obama, It will be 4 more years of Obama even if Mitt wins, he will just carry out the same policies, Sad that we had a chance for a real change to an independent society with Rick Perry running then Rick Santorum but we blew it this year, guess we gotta hope for the best in 2016 and vote in some new senators in order to block unconstitutional bills, cause now it is all about blocking bills that erode your freedom instead of creating bills to better peoples lives.

I like Ron Paul (I am as libertarian as he) and Ralph Nader (I am almost as progressive as him). I refuse to vote for someone more authoritarian than Obama (such as Bush) but I really wanted someone as antistatist as Ron Paul. We even have similar views on how the federal government should handle marriages (only treating them as contracts between adults and have marriages only recognized by the states where the couple were married and the states that recognize the contract of the original state). Marriage IS a religious ceremony and the government has no business with what goes on between two adults consenting to be joined in a union (religious and/or civil contract).

My first vote will be this year too, but im prepared and decided. just analise the proposals of each candidate and choose who had the best for needs of your country. politicians have high influence in the media in countrie like ours, so search differents fonts of news and proposals. the vote is your, so dont be scared about what your parents and friends think. never think that politicans who are corrupts deserve your vote just for little things that they do.
