Transit System Problems

Hello everyone,

I have been having a lot of trouble building a good transportation system in my cities. I have simcity 4 with the NAM installed.

The biggest problem I seem to be having is road access. When I lay down rail for a passenger rail system that crosses roads, road access gets cut off for the areas that are surrounded by the rail. After that i tried to eliminate road crossings by using flexible overpasses and underpasses, but no one seems to use them. Also, elevated rail and monorail cut off road access in the same way.

What am I doing wrong, and does anyone have any tips?

Also, I can't get my GLR system to work, and the properties that face roads with GLR in the medians say they don't have road access. How can I fix this?

Two last questions. Can normal trains run on the same elevated tracks as El trains? How can I make tunnels for normal rail without a road over top of it?

Thanks for your help!

Well, I don't have all the answers to your questions but I may have some. Let's see ...

If you are having road problems as described, is your game build up to 1,1,638 at least? This is needed to support the NAM.

GLR doesn't work without stations, which you must download from the STEX separately. No lots are included in the NAM.

Heavy rail is like the intercity stuff you are used to in RL. It is too massive to run on the light rail tracks used for EL, NAM, and subway. All three light rail systems can be connected to each other.

I have never had this problem, and it may well be that you need the updates. What is the build version of your game? Find the executable file (SimCity 4.exe), hover your mouse over it, and see what you get back.

    Thanks for the response.

Where can I locate that file? Is it something I could read off of the game's box?

I found Sim City.cfg. When I hover over it all it says is 333 bytes. I also found a bunch of exception minidump files.

If you have the desktop icon for Simcity 4, right click that and click "Open File Location"

A folder should pop up that contains Simcity 4.EXE

    hover your mouse over that.

This is also a symptom of having a left-hand drive game but installing the NAM with the right-hand option selected. Just a thought...

This would actually suggest to me that there's an outdated NAM version in play here.

In NAM Version 30, I merged all of the LHD Rail-related paths into NetworkAddonMod1.dat, mainly to cut down on the number of times people asked "where's my trains?" or about "cut-off" situations like this. (They surpassed the "red arrow" as the #1 tech support issue after awhile.) With RHW and NWM roads, however, the LHD Rail paths involved have not been shifted over to the main RHD files, so that issue can still result there.

If you're running any NAM Version between Version 21 and Version 29, in an LHD game, without the LHD Plugin, you will get this issue. The NAM does not change drive-side, and you need to install the plugin for the drive side you have, not the drive side you want to have.

Make sure you do indeed have the most recent NAM. There should be an icon at the bottom of your Highways menu with a NAM logo on it. Hover over it. If it lists a Controller Build version other than r132, you've got an outdated NAM. If the icon is not there, that's also a sign that your NAM version is outdated (the little "telltale" icon was previously only included in NAM Essentials, and only made it into the NAM proper in Version 30).

Sorry for the slow response! Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I checked on the version of my game. It is 1.1.613.0

Also I checked on the NAM version, and there is no NAM icon under the highways menu.

What exactly would you suggest I do? I need some step by step instructions since I stink with computers.

Also, can someone post a link to the updated NAM.

Looks like the first thing you should do is to update your game. Version 1.1.613 is the unpatched version of Deluxe. To use the NAM, it is recommended to update to version 1.1.638. You can find links to update here. See the Nightlights and Updates section. You will probably need the SKU2 update.

After that you can get the newest version of NAM here. Note that the Download button does not actually download the file - due to size limitations. Use the link in the NAM listing. It is also available at SC4Devotion (Link) if you're a member there.
