This City Journal is based on a real life map, kindly made for me by Dobdriver and found here: https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2745

Area included is the red box:

21n1jf6.jpg

The only places of note found in real life in this area are:

Enning http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enning,_South_Dakota

White Owl http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Owl,_South_Dakota

Elm Springs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elm_Springs,_South_Dakota

So basically, civilization had not found this area yet. I will ignore any sort of infrastructure and start from scratch, although I will try and name cities corresponding roughly with anything in their real life place, e.g. townships and roads.

Enning: Population 24

241qmpw.png

Small settlement that was set up to provide gasoline and rest for people driving across Meade County. A few farms and small houses have sprung up around it.

Armstrong: Population 80

Set up for the same reason as Enning, which lies about 18km west. Recruiting people seemed to be a problem as no-one was willing to commute from Sturgis (seat for Meade County, pop 6,000ish) and the motel could not facilitate the required workers staying there. Therefore it's own little settlement started springing up around the facilities.

Cool! I have been not too far away from there... Eagle Butte... a very interesting topography to build on.

    Sycamore: Population 244

    ru2p9e.png

Like the other settlements detailed so far, Sycamore (named so after the first tree planted in the settlement) grew from a need for an overnight rest stop. Now however there's a thriving community, which is mainly based around the agriculture industry.

    Hope: Population 841

    34pcjvb.png

Located about 6km west of Sycamore, Hope is based on an agricultural industry. Inspired by the successful farms set up in Enning and Sycamore, there was hope (hence the name) that farming could be set up on a larger level. So far it's proving a roaring success.

    __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    Maddison: Population 22

    2nhf4mt.png

Located about 7km south of Sycamore and on the same road as Sycamore and Hope. Maddison is based around a shop selling farm produce from the aforementioned places. It is hoping to exploit the predicted population boom of Meade County.

I have never been that far north but I have seen the southern plains driving from Texas to Colorado. From Dumas to Lamar, through Boise City, Kit Carson, etc. Man that is some desolate land. The only trees are harvard oaks, which are some kind of cruel joke. Some of those "towns" don't have anything that is open. An actual tumbleweed hit the car :D. That happened somewhere around Texline(town that smells like corn syrup..barf). I can't imagine the kind of road trip a drive from Texas to Alberta would be, I know someone who did that(family moved from Calgary to Dallas). Still its interesting in its own way.. If UFO's or ball lightning were real, you'd get a chance to see them being out in the middle of nowhere.

Its more bearable when there is some kind of topography, love out west how miles can go by so fast as you watch a butte or edge of a plateau come into view and then pass by it an hour later. Much better than out east where its trees, trees, and...more trees!

Plenty of room to build in those wide open spaces out there. Currently there is a building boom in the Dakota's with the huge oil reserves there. Will you be adding those into the region?
