It is all over the news so I won't raise a quote. Today is Shrove Tuesday, the day on which you get rid of all your fat and sweets before the 40 days of fasting called Lent in the Christian church. Countries that have heavily Catholic populations, there is usually a public party.

Tomorrow, however, the curtain of a putative 40 day fast precedes the celebration of the Feast of the Resurrection. In some places it is customary to give up something for Lent. What are you giving up this year?

When I was a kid my mother was a strict Roman Catholic and did her best to bring me and my sister up in the faith. Unfortunately, she failed in the face of modern enlightenment, so that we pretty much ignored the 'holy calendar' once we got out on our own. It is a shame, but the rules of the Church, however modernized, have failed with both of us. My father was a bad example to both of us being a strictly brought up, but non-practicing, member of the United Church of Canada. I guess that makes us a products of a Micksed marriage.

What are you giving up this year?

Non-hedonistic activities. :P

Seriously though, people need to be realistic about what they give up for Lent. Don't give up something that you can't live without. All you're going to do is be miserable for the entire Lenten period.

I no longer observe Fat Tuesday or Lent.

What?! Only RED meat? Does that mean that I can eat chicken?

Know what, if I plan to observe Lent next year, I will eat a kosher diet.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

    Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

When I was a kid, it was no meat on any Friday. My father still follows that diet.

At the time of the Council of Nicea the fishermen were complaining that not enough fish was being eaten, that's why.

    Yes, basically, that is why.

It turns out that a diet of less-meat-more fish is a good thing but that wasn't known at the time.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis
