Tested gmax on wine 1.4-rc1 today (new release this morning) and found that the material editor and the material navigator that were previously broken are working. Now, after I fix my registry, I can probably install the BAT for the first time in something like five years.

wine 1.4-rc2 came out today. I can't get the game to stay up more than a few minutes with it. Even drawing a bit of network causes a CTD on my machine. Just a note that maybe this is one to skip.

next day: Filed a bug on this. It is clearly a regression. I may drop back to 1.2 so I can run the game.

That's because I don't update Wine since the version 1.3. That's the only version where SC4 works fine.

1.4-rc1 worked fine for me. I am in the middle of a regression test for the error between rc1 and rc2 at the moment. Stay put on 1.3 which isn't currently offered by the distro for neither Ubuntu, nor Mint even if you update to the winehq ppa.

Regression result showed no errors. My fault for not being thorough enough in my test.

The problem is a doozy of a bug in SC4. Just try and run a highway bridge across the top of the big tile in the bottom left of the New York region. More in my Bugs and Technical Issues post.

I ran with 1.4-rc2 this afternoon for an hour and a half without any crashes tracing a commuter loop. Found it too. One city really does have far too many folks and not enough jobs. My railroad runs over my whole region and is loaded end-to-end by an impossible number of Sims. These people are trying to commute over something like ten cities.
