I found it especially interesting that he blames himself for the Facebook epidemic. The fact that the CEO of Facebook himself has caved in enough to honestly say "this was a mistake" is definitely eye-catching. One would think any man or woman in his position would say "I've got my little white 'f' on virtually every single website in the world, so I did a damn good job", but there's clearly two sides to every coin.

I have always agreed, though, that sitting online complaining about the exam stress is not going to solve the issue; studying is. It's called biting the bullet, folks.

Sometimes I feel personally guilty for creating a drain effect on the nation’s intelligence.

Good so why don't you donate those billions to a fund to remove standardized testing

completely.

He hinted at the fact that he might even discontinue Facebook services for users aged 18-24

isn't that the biggest user age group?

I use facebook rarely and only to keep in touch with my granddaughter who lives in Newfoundland, which is about 3000 miles east of me. My daughter regularly posts a photo album. When we want to say anything serious, we use e-mail.

There is too much chatter on facebook. The general feel is that it is an arena of the chattering classes.

Bleating about examinations is foolish. All students know they have to face them. If they don't do the work to get a good mark on exams, what on earth are they doing in school? Why not just give up, drop out, and go dig ditches? An experience like that will soon chase them back into school if they can then afford it.

Wake up, kiddies, it is a harsh world out there and nobody is going to shelter you from disappointment and failure.

One saying I came up with recently is: "when life gives you lemons, get on Facebook and complain about it".

Of course, there's always the double standard of people complaining about others complaining...other people venting never really bothered me. I just tend to keep my problems to myself because I feel a bit difficult to be around when I'm cranky.

Newfoundland, which is about 3000 miles east of me.

Er... I think you mean kilometers. Google puts a drive from Hensall to St. John's at 2869 km... that's only 1783 miles.

Bleating about examinations is foolish. All students know they have to face them. If they don't do the work to get a good mark on exams, what on earth are they doing in school?

It isn't just exams. Complaining is in vogue.

But ultimately, so long as they do what has to get done after they finish complaining, where's the harm really?

I can sort of understand why someone would complain about exams although I can't really personally relate... I never spent much time studying or stressing out over exams. I mostly just showed up and did it. I've gotten As on tests I didn't spend one second studying for. :D But that's me.

Ok, but you have to think about how the road crawls. Meant Km and not Mi. However, it will be over 3K by road/rail/frerry by the time we make it to Port au Basques. My daughter lives just north of the next big town on the coast.

I too can understand why people would put complaints on a blog, or something a little more private, but broadcasting their trivial troubles on facebook is just a little too universal. Stuff like this can come back to haunt them in furure years when a prospective employer does a search on facebook to see if you will be a troublemaker.

I don't think many people realize that facebook posts are broadcast to the world.

I heard a different quote, "If life gives you lemons, make lemonade then find someone who life gave him vodka and make hard lemonade."

I use Facebook for games, keeping in contact with family, and venting. I plan on using LinkedIn if I need a social networking profile for professional use then removing all photos and private information from Facebook, maybe going as far as changing my name.

I don't think many people realize that facebook posts are broadcast to the world.

Only if your settings have them as public. I by default restrict my posts (and just about everything else) so that only my friends can see them and I have lists made up so I can share things only with certain friends and not others if I so choose.

For the snoopers of this world, that is not much of a restriction. Everything on the Internet is broadcast. TCP/IP is a broadcast protocol. All it takes is a big enough machine with a packet decoder and you can catch everything.

Sometimes people just need a place to vent and in my opinion better they do it online where people can ignore them than having them vent in person where people have to pay attention to their (mostly pointless) points.

Depends on how much it costs to visit grandma. Both of mine are in the hereafter.

Alright, but now you're in a perhaps slightly paranoid territory. The NSA, CIA, what have you absolutely have the capacity to do this, but they would only do so to spy on suspected criminals. There is no reason to do it for John Doe, it's a waste of resources.

Far a more common concern is prospective employers checking your Facebook before they consider hiring you... in which case simply keeping anything potentially unflattering private is sufficient since they aren't going to be hacking into your account.

want to stay connected to your grand ma, how bout you go visit her?

Geography makes this not always practical. I have some friends on Facebook who live pretty far away. There's always telephone (or even skype!), but this requires more effort than Facebook... effort which is not worth expending for everyone, especially when they're far off and no visits are likely. I have friends on Facebook who I may very well never come face to face with again, but I'm still interested in being able to keep up with how things are going for them.

I used to use Skype for keeping in contact with friends/pen pals but forums and Facebook is much easier (especially since they live in different time zones). Well, I used forums with most of them before Facebook...

Furthermore, I have family in Mexico who I can only contact through Facebook or email except during rare occasions when I get to visit them.

What's up with the haters here? Facebook is epic, I've become so dependant on it I rarely even remember birthdays anymore. I check Facebook once every hour or so when I have the chance to. It's where people invite you to events or post important news (I found out that a friend had gotten engaged and that another was pregnant through Facebook), it's where they keep you updated on their lives. It might not be interesting that Linda is making a smoothie but personally I like these small tidbits of information, it makes people more "vivid" in my memory. If you don't like Facebook, then don't bother being on Facebook. I love Facebook. It's the love of my life, or something.

My daughter is a heavy facebook user, but I am not. Facebook belongs to the 'in your face' generation of which I am not a member. I value my privacy and am not likely to let it all hang out on-line.

IMHO Facebook is now used as a cop-out by some people who feel that they would rather be on-line than have a real conversation with real friends who are within physical reach.

It is also used by some stupid people as a tool to further bullying of vulnerable teeners, and this is reprehensible in the highest degree. Some of the messages on the news broadcasts discussing bullying have been most illiterate and utterly disgusting. Anyone on facebook is vulnerable.

I don't know that I'd call it a "cop-out". True, it can decrease spoken communication. But communication is still communication, even if it's by text and/or indirect.

I, for one, often find that I am more comfortable typing messages to people than speaking to them in person. It's simpler and easier. There's less room for missed cues. And I can be far more articulate when I have time to think about what I'm saying as opposed to having to come up with it in realtime on the fly.

That said, I would never do text chat with someone who is in the same room as me except as a joke, or to say something I don't want a third person in the room to hear.

Zuckerberg, if college students weren't using Facebook to procrastinate, they'd find some other way to procrastinate. As long as there are finals, there will be procrastination. Facebook is only one time-sucking activity out of many.

During my first finals, we didn't have Facebook on campus ('cuz my college was ridiculous), and I still managed to find ways to play around instead of studying.:golly:

Edit - not saying I don't agree with him. I too get tired of the "omg i haaate finals why am I on facebook!!!!11" status updates every ten minutes.

Well, putting off until too late and expecting to pass a final is a good way to get a Christmas furlough in some schools I have attended. If the faculty review decides you are not working they usually suggest you quit wasting their time and your money.

Well any college I've ever attended and or taught in had higher academic standards than that. You might be surprised how little the student fees pay towards the operation of these institutions. All the universities in Canada are private and have a huge fund raising department. Mind you, they do get a government grant, and it just about keeps the lights on, and student tuitions might pay the water bill.

If colleges in the U.S. operate on that basis, how do they keep their accreditation?

Thank You for the Continued Support!

Simtropolis depends on donations to fund site maintenance costs.
Without your support, we just would not be in our 24th year online!  You really help make this a great community. *:thumb:

But we still need your support to stay online. If you're able to, please consider a donation to help us stay up and running. This helps sustain a platform where we can share our community creations for years to come.

    STEX Collections

By way of a "Thank You" gift, we'd like to send you our STEX Collector's DVD. It's some of the best buildings, lots, maps and mods collected for you over the years. Check out the STEX Collections for more info.

Each donation helps keep Simtropolis online, open and free!

Thank you for reading and enjoy the site!
