Hi. I got a friend who sent me a city he wants me to look at and help with. I don't know what to do with the file so that I can see it in my game. Can someone point me in the direction of some instructions for this?

Thanks for any help.

Well, to use that same city, you will need your friend's region to make it work properly (City sizes, region terrain, etc.). But that is if there are no downloads or plugins used in that city. If that city has a mod that your computer doesn't, then the game may crash when you try to open it. So what you really need are your friend's Plugins folder and the Regions folder, both located in Documents\Simcity 4. Then they will have to specify which city they want you to work on.

After you get these then you can play the city and make whatever changes you want. :)

Another way to go about doing that is to first put the city file in the downloads folder of the regions subfolder in your Simcity 4 folder. (I know, that's a lot of folders to go through...)

Next, open up any region (or create a new region), and find a city tile that's the same size of the city you were given. You'll find an icon that says "Import City" when you hover the cursor over it. From there, find the downloads folder in the popup that comes up, and you should find the very city you moved into that folder.

Select that and the city should appear into your map.

Ok, he sent me the region folder so that makes it a bit easier. Now, he doesn't have any mods or downloads, but I've got a massive amount of mods and downloads, is it still doomed to crash?

Your plugins won't make a difference, unless you make alterations to the city. Then your frend won't have the plugins you used in the city.

To make sure rename your Plugins folder to something like old, or test. When you start the game it will make a new plugins folder, after your done delete the new plugins folder, and rename the old one.

No, but when you enter the city, your mods will be in effect. So if you give the city file back to your friend, it will probably crash. You could either send your friend your plugins folder or just rename your plugins folder to anything else and enter the city. This will allow you to play the game with no plugins or mods at all.

^ The other thing to check is that both of you are running the same program. Your version numbers should match. This is in

    C:\Program Files\...\SimCity 4\Apps\SimCity 4.exe

Just hover your mouse over this file and the information should show (w7) or right click it and open the version tab.
