Linux Mint 12 (Lisa) Release Candidate has been released on the site.

I downloaded and installed the DVD yesterday and it is just fine thank you. I am writing this from it. There are several ease-of-use improvements over 11 (Katia) and it is seven thousand rows of Christmas trees better than Ubuntu 11.10 on which it is based. You have a choice of four desktop decors at log on, but the newest one, Gnome3, is yet a little buggy. I am on the Gnome 2 desktop, which you can see in the desktop thread. You can hardly tell you are not really on Windows, except that it doesn't cost anything.

SimCity 4 runs under wine 3.1.28 (default, but you have to add it) just fine. Testing yesterday in both hardware and software mode failed to produce a CTD, but I didn't run very long.

For Katia users, the menus have been reorganized. A lot of system stuff is now under Other. This streamlining is making this ever more an ordinary user operating system. You don't have to be a computer geek to run this one.

On the other hand, geeks like me will find it a lot of fun, and easy to manipulate. The initial load is pretty skinny, but it has everything a home user will usually want. I had to add a few geekish touches because that's the way I am.

So, if you want to try this out, download the DVD, and boot it. You can run the trial without installing it, and it won't affect your system unless you click on install, when you will have lots of choices about cleaning off your old O/S or setting up a dual boot.

If you want to be a little safer and are not very adventurous, use Katia (LM 11), as it is pretty solid.

Is it like the apple Lisa?

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

Thanks for that, I must get my linux pc sorted out and get Mint installed, as to

Also I get surprised when I didn't found the KDE version of LM11, It has never been released

Linux Mint 10 seems to have had the last KDE version, 11 only has these versions

After a full day of use, I have put Lisa RC aside for the moment. Still a lot of work to be done, and not everything works properly, including apport-bug for reporting problems. Totem locks up and becomes unkillable, even with the kill command. Some minor items, like the ability to edit the gnome2 menu are missing.

So I am back to Katia until the final release, but it was an interesting adventure. The Mint implementors are much more thorough than the ones on Ubuntu. Ubuntu's early releases are usually adventures in bug finding.

However, the same link above will eventually take you to a download page for LM 11 (Katia) which is stable. I have been using it for several months.

I will probably test Lisa (after updates) about once a week until the final release, when I will very likely switch to it.

There have been several updates to Lisa RC and it is better now. The new MATE desktop seems to be working fine. Just tested it with no problems. MATE seems to be a union of the classical Gnome2 desktop and Gnome3.

Some things are still a little rough. The Seahorse (security) integration still has problems. It can't seem to update the keyring for passwords on applications that it is supposed to keep.

Great news. Hope so LM12 will be the best system of Linux Mint, I think the best untill now is Linux Mint 10. It was more stable than the version 11.

I have found LM 11 pretty good, but it does have a tendency to hang on reboot.

I think you will like LM 12 once they get the desktops all debugged. There are four selectable at login. Just click the little gear wheel and make your choice.

I put Ubuntu 11.10 up yesterday on another partition and found that the installer hung trying to get the supporting fonts for wine. I formatted the partition. So much for Ubuntu. If you want it at all, tet 11.04 LTS. It will be supported for two years until 13.04. Also, Synaptic software installer seems to have disappeared. Couldn't find it with apt-get install.

I've picked up a secondhand computer, needs a bit of an upgrade and it will be the xmas holidays before I have any spare time to install mint on it, but am looking forward to it

Also, Synaptic software installer seems to have disappeared. Couldn't find it with apt-get install.

    that's a shame, I've always liked Synaptic

Maybe I'll upgrade my system insted to erase and install again, I have consolidated all my software and programs, and I don't want to loose these. By other way, Its funny to re-install everything.

    Thanks for that.

I keep two partitions on my disk. One for the production version (Currently LM 11) and one for the next version (LM 12). Since I keep important files and installations on a separate HDD, installing a new decor is merely a matter of installation then placing some links. A few things that are system related like Tomboy notes I simply copy from one partition to the other.

For wine related stuff (SC4) you need to also get the registry entries but wine supplies a registry editor ...

Seems that all I have to do is update my RC to the release using apt. Probably take a while, so I'll start it before I go out today.

LATER: Done! My new desktop image is at https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/topic/31-desktop-everyone-has-one-of-these/page__pid__1210350__st__2220#entry1210350

Installation went smooth as glass from the live DVD. I used the protocol set out by the site and used their backup tool as specified. After installing the system and the ATI/AMD graphics driver, fglrx, I restored this mornings save and software list, and the system is the same as it was except I have all the desktop enhancements and other things in LM 12.

One of the big ones is that my new HD monitor is now running in HD rather than stretched VGA. fglrx has a problem with the fonts in the Gnome3 desktop, so the one I posted is the Gnome Classic one. The new one looks good, but as soon as the driver is installed the whole thing goes funny and the fonts are messed up.

Everything else seems normal. If I find any more frogs I'll update this list.

I am running linux mint right now. Its pretty slick.

The only thing I can't figure out how to do is also graphics related. I have an ATI Radeon HD 5670 installed, and I know it works because the fan on the card spins when I was putting the computer together. After installing fglrx the catalyst control center app doesn't seem to recognize any devices and says I need to install drivers. But I thought that's what fglrx was for?

Finally I installed the SO. It was a total oddisey because a problem: 1024x768 screen resolution, sometimes the installation window was too big that I couldn't look the buttons of continue.

Well, it is installed. Now, it looks totally new for me. I need help to customize it.

Ok. I'm getting confused. I have two bars, one at the top (that I don't know what is exactly) and one at the bottom (that looks like the clasical bar, but I can't customize it because there are no menu when I do right-click). What should I do, the top bar looks great, but the bottom are not easy at all like the others versions. But I must to have only one, because my screen resolution are not too big.

    I really need help.

There are four desktops: Gnome, Gnome-classic, Gnome-classic (no enhancements), and MATE. Which one are you running? It sounds like Gnome-classic.

For some reason, you cannot customize nor edit the panels. If you want to edit the menus you need the menu editor which is not on the distribution. It is called alacarte. Just look it up in synaptic and add it. I ran LM12 for a couple of days, and found some problems among which is the failure of the apport system. If you type any package name in apport-bug xxx you get some comment that this is not an LM package and it cannot be reported. Also yelp is not working, so you have no help system. I put a couple of things on the forum for Mint, and have received no reply to date. I have retreated to LM 11. It really pays to have two partitions so that you are not stuck with a new release. My feeling on this is that it is a premature release driven by some marketing need, and what we have is a beta. I am not amused.

The bar at the top is the usual menu panel. The one at the bottom seems to have only the windows reporter. Changing desktops is fraught with user problems. I left Ubuntu because of their lack of desktop flexibility.

One of the other problems I found in LM12 is that it has very few default themes and all the control apps seem to be different or in different menus. I think they took some kind of big leap into Gnome3 without very much Quality Assurance. I think I'm going to stay on LM11 and only test LM12 (where I am right now) about once a week until it becomes usable. After all the hype, this is really disappointing.

OK, I need assistance here. I just got Linux Mint Lisa 12 and I have a couple of problems. Alejandro has been helpful. Seeing as we both know both English and Spanish his blog etc will help me a lot.

I guess, someone could combine my thread: https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/topic/47553-how-do-i-boot-from-a-usb-flash-drive/ with this one.

Finally picked up a version of wine that works with my graphics set up in hardware mode. LM12 users need to go to the wine site and pick up the latest version of wine (1.3.37 at least). Use the instructions under downloads for Ubuntu. You will have to override the distribution's verification error. This has been an endemic problem with the distro for some time. The wine site hands over the software and someone sets it up, but doesn't get it right.

Leet is an Internet language (like chat speak/txt) in which letters are replaced with numbers. It is spelled "leet," "l33t," "1337," and "31337" and I find it funny that a program's version is 1.3.37. A Minecraft mod was released as version 1.3.37 as the last version on the 1.3 branch even though it was preceded by 1.3.34. Version 1.4 of the mod was for the full release of the game.

Clearly or you would know that wine is spelled without a majescule character as are most UNIX/Linux things. Some of us just adamantly refuse to pay Microshaft yet another exorbitant license fee. This may produce a difficulty or two, but those of us who choose this path are generally good at coping with this as well.

By the way, I have finally been able to kiss LM11 farewell, and am now permanently, until updated, on LM12. Next update should be soon after Ubuntu 12.04 which I will also test.
