Welcome to the conversation.

Not really enough information, but I'll try. If you need more help with this please post the first twenty lines only of one of the exception reports you'll find in the directory of the same name.

What version of the game are you running? You can find out by looking for the .exe in your Program Files folder under Maxis and hovering your mouse over the .exe. It will tell us a lot about your game. Posting the exception report will tell us that too.

Where did you get your game? Did you purchase it at a store or download it from a vendor site? If the former, you are probably missing some essential game patches.

If you need to patch your game, look here. Registration there is free.

Beyond that, we really need to look at your dump.

I am having a similar problem. The game loads but then closes out just before the region loads. I have downloaded the patch and it still does the same thing. I bought the game at Best Buy at least 5 years ago and it has worked up until now. I also attempted to reinstall the game but that did not fix the problem.

This is the first part of my exception report:

    Exception time: 11/22/2011, at 18:26:31.

    Exception code: 0xC0000005 (-1073741819) ACCESS_VIOLATION.

    Current thread ID: 1272 (0x000004f8).

    Version information:

    Application/module path: C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps\SimCity 4.exe

    Application/module version name: SimCity 4

    Application/module version: 1.1.638.0

    System version: Windows NT 5.1

System memory: 1024 Megabytes total, 292 Megabytes free.

    Exception module: C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps\SimCity 4.exe.

    Exception address: 0x007aba41. Section:Offset: 0x01:0x003a4a41.

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Is this happening without any plugins and on new, never before used, regions?

It happens every time the game loads. Only it never actually gets to the region so i couldn't even say what region is loading although it is probably not a new one. I also do have plugins but as I've said already, the game was working with the same plugins before.

You seem a little short on memory. You only have 1GB according to that panel. How much virtual space do you have? Increasing it might help. I think we need to know some more about your machine. Please do this:

Open your run box and type in:

    dxdiag

    and press enter.

Take a snapshot of the first page and post it. I think that will put us in the picture to better help you.

Looks fine. Can you get started in a new region? If not, try a reinstall. Your other region may have been corrupted.

When the game opens, it has four icons across the top of the screen. The left-most one is the region control. Click it, and choose the item on the left side to create a new, default region. Your reply suggests you are playing in the Timbuktu region which is a tutorial and you shouldn't play there. It can get reset.

Insufficient: You also have to change the name in the Region.ini file.

Well, your dump header shows you are missing the two published patches that can be found here. Scroll down on this page to reach the EA Support button on the left side, click it and accept the agreement.

On the next page, take the fourth panel to update to 1,1,638. You need the one (there are several) for North America (1,1,610). Just download it and save it somewhere.

Next, open the second panel on the same page (BAT). On the BAT page, go to the second panel pick the patch for 1,1,640. Download and save this.

Now, close your browser, make sure the game isn't running and apply the patches:

    1. EP1 takes you from 610 to 638
    2. BATupdate takes you from 638 to 640.

You should now be able to play without interruption except that there are some command line options you need to consider if you have any of: DVI graphics; any version of windows after XP; a multi-core processor.

    • DVI graphics (16:9) you need these two options on your shortcut target line:
      -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32
This is for my DVI 24" screen running 1080p. You should set the -r parameters to suit your machine.
    • Multi-core processor you need to restrict the operating system scheduler to one core for the program. Use:
      -CPUcount:1
    • Post XP versions of windows: Save frequently. This causes a garbage collect. Use the in-game save after you have done something you'd rather not have to do over. In-game save is CTRL+s

I hope this solves all your problems. However if you want to see the full list of options it is here. If you are going to play with these, save your user structure first, just in case you step on something.

Here is my Linux command script which shows several options in use:

    #!/bin/bash

    date

    env WINEPREFIX="/home/john/.wine" \

    wine "C:/Program Files/Maxis/SimCity 4 Deluxe/Apps/SimCity 4.exe" \

    -intro:off -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -d:software\

    -f -CPUcount:1 -audio:off &>~/sc4.log

    date

If you are not used to console work, you may be confused by this but starting with the second token on the fourth line, you see my command to start the game. I use some features of Linux to collect some stats in the file sc4.log and command lines can be continued by ending a line with a backslash which says "ignore the following newline character". wine is the Linux WINdows Executive.
