How do you move game files to another computer?

In a few weeks, I will be switching my current laptop with my dad's laptop, but I want to keep my game files and possibly the mods put I know how to move them. I have a few USB memory sticks lying about which I could use.

I am currently working on one of my cities, and have been on it since June (yes, its a long time, but I bet a lot of you have done the same)

Thanks in advance for any help.

You could copy your plugins folder, your albums folder, and your regions folder. Then you paste those on your flash drive. After installing the game, of course, take the folders from the flash drive, and put them in your Simcity 4 folder. When it asks you to overwrite, click yes. When you enter the game it should be exactly the same as on your other computer. But make sure your flash drive has enough memory to store all of your plugins, regions, and albums. Otherwise you'll have to copy each folder, once at a time. :)

I think I have enough flash drives to cover the plugins. Do you know if there is any way to copy the city or region file, or does copying the SimCity 4 folder do that for you?

To get all your cities, all you really need to do is to copy the folder named Regions.

To get your entire environment, copy the complete ...Documents\SimCity 4 ... folder. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to burn it on to a CD or DVD so you will have back-up. All it takes is a stray EMP to blot your flash drive.

^ All it takes is walking past an unshielded electric motor or warming it up a little.

You may also consider investing into an external backup drive. I purchased one after a few very close-calls with my documents; about $40 will get you a good 320gb drive, and $50-65 for a good 500 GB drive. More expensive than the most common thumb drives, but they can hold everything you need to transfer, and will provide a good backup medium. Bear in mind it will be a drive with spinning plates, not a solid state drive like your thumb drive, so you have to take very good care of it. You can invest in mass storage thumb drives, but a 256 GB model will run you about $700 ($2-3 per GB).

Actually, I have two external HDDs connected by USB ports, which are fast enough because of buffering, etc. Each has two partitions and they mirror each other. The first partition on the one that is always on-line actually contains my SimCity 4 operating stuff with both the user folder and the program files/maxis folder, as well as backups for the registry and my Downloads folder. The second partition holds my general system backups that I do once a month. This disk is 1TB and cost about $150 as I recall. The other disk is off-line mostly, and contains copies of all the files on the other external disk.

This arrangement allows me to operate the game from multiple operating partitions on my main system. I use links (short-cuts) to reach the folders on the external drive. Since I am running Linux, this is very easy to do. I have also made a multi-user test by simply opening the game in another account, when it will create the user space automatically. You do have to set up the link to the Maxis directory. And this is why you should never add plugins to the .../Maxis/SimCity 4/Plugins folder.
