The World's first skyscraper in a rural area!

I'm just a group of atoms typing this.

What do I know?

Is this a case of someone thinking "build it and they will come"?

There is this thing called the law of supply and demand. How many people can afford that place and why would they be in that area?

Surely the money used to build this could be put to better use.

But, then, I never did understand ostentatious displays. Many aspects of human behavior elude me. This is one of them.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I agree with Meg. And, why to build something that it is urban in a rural area? It doen't make sense.

Did you notice the golden calf? Reminds me of the aria in Faust "Le veau d'or ..." and we all know what happened to the good doctor.

They will probably redevelop parts of the area into bigger condominiums. It would be good if they made an equal amount of low density buildings into parks/community gardens/urban farms as high density apartments or hotels.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

A similar thing in Blackhawk, Colorado. The Ameristar Hotel/Casino. It's 33 stories/350 feet. The population of the town is 115.

Proof that if you plopdown a skyscraper landmark in a town of 100 in sim city, it can be realistic.

This place is maybe 10 miles from the smaller city of Jiangyin and 80 miles from Shanghai. That whole region is one big urban sprawl. From what I can tell, just in the two nearest small cities that vicinity there are maybe 1.5 million or so people.

I found the building in Google earth, here are the coords: 31°49'48.44"N, 120°25'18.97"E

Their city must be trying to get their urban or suburban sprawl on early ??? A city should have its first skyscraper until it's population reaches at least between 45,000 - 60,000 people if that city doesn't have height laws. :ohyes:

I personally think this is a great achievement for human kind.

In a country that has very little farming for such a huge population... Building up should be the way to go. Even though I'm in the environmentalist point of view, I love skyscrapers. I'd rather see 4 blocks of skyscrapers than 80 blocks of housing.

But i totally agree how this is such a risky investment, but the rich town could afford it if they put all their money together (and they did).

Upside to this... It makes me feel better when I plop a skyscraper in a medium or low density area! (:

I would have to say this is a pretty risky project. Building a skyscraper that large and luxurious in a small city is very expensive (especially with a life-size ox made of solid gold) and chances are too little revenue (excluding patrons coming from abroad) will cause the hotel to go bankrupt and eventually they would have to sell those lavish furnishings and possibly remove the structure altogether. If the owners can pull it off and get successful with this project, then I could say it was a smart move.

The culture is completely different from ours. I think it is an expression of "if you build it, they will come".

I don't think it is a case of economics that drove this so much as a desire to appear wealthy. I imagine that someone ran some numbers that said it was possible to make a reasonable profit from this, but at the same time, China is interested in looking more and more like a world superpower with just as much clout as the US. It's not that much different from a person who buys a big house and expensive car that he can't afford just so he looks wealthier than he is.
